Injuries worries and international appearances: News about the AC Milan Women

By Steph Insixiengmay -

Though the international break is underway, there’s still time for some updates about the AC Milan Women with various players engaged in commitments.

➤ Italy have advanced to the final of the Algarve Cup. With the help of Milan players such as Laura Giuliani, Valentina Bergamaschi, and current Fiorentina loanee, Valentina Giacinti, the Azzurre were able to qualify for the tournament’s final.

In particular, Bergamaschi had an assist during Italy’s first game against Denmark, which was then converted by Barbara Bonansea (49′). Laura Giuliani also started that game and helped the team keep a clean sheet. Giacinti scored in Italy’s last match against Norway (10′).

➤ Italy will play Sweden in the final of the Algarve Cup. The match will take place this Wednesday and kick-off time will be at 12pm CET.

➤ Alia Guagni and Martina Piemonte also took part in Azzurre’s first match against Denmark. However, the two players have had to leave the Italy camp early due to injuries, as was confirmed by the FIGC. Piemonte was shown in the stands with a cast on her left leg and in crutches.

The forward suffered a ligament injury to her left knee during that first match. Guagni, on the other hand, has left due to discomfort in one of her calves. Her exact condition is not known and both players will undergo medical exams once they return to Milan.

➤ Guðný Árnadóttir is also injured and is currently recuperating in Milan. The defender did not join her Icelandic national teammates for the She Believes Cup in the United States. The exact condition of the player’s injury is not known but more could be revealed about it within the upcoming days.

➤ Laia Codina scored her first goal with Spain’s U23s in a friendly match against Belgium. La Rojita trounced their opponents by a score of 5-0. Codina played for 61 minutes and helped the Spaniards keep a clean sheet.

➤ Christy Grimshaw’s Scotland lost their first match in the Pinatar Cup against Wales but bounced back with a victory against Slovakia. Grimshaw started the match for the Scots against the Welsh on February 17th, though it ended in a 3-1 defeat for the team.

She was an unused substitute in the team’s 2-0 win over Slovakia just two days later. Scotland will play their final game of the tournaments this Tuesday against Hungary. Kickoff time for that match will be at 19:30 GMT.

➤ Refiloe Jane captained South Africa to a victory over Algeria in the team’s first AWCON qualifier of the year. The South Africans won the game by a score of 2-0. Banyana Banyana now holds a one-game advantage over their opponents, and the second match of the qualifier will be played on February 23rd in Algeria. The winner of this tie will qualify for the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco in July.

➤ Serie A Femminile will return from hiatus on February 26th and AC Milan will take on Sassuolo that Saturday. Kickoff time will be at 14:30 CET.

➤ Christy Grimshaw has a sprained ankle and Sara Thrige will be in quarantine for a further seven days due to the positive cases of COVID-19 in the Denmark squad, as per Luca Maninetti.
