Inzaghi reacts to defeat against Milan: “It burns me to have lost a derby”

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has admitted that it ‘burns’ that his side lost the derby against AC Milan tonight at San Siro.

Milan took the share of the spoils from the derby as they beat Inter 3-2 in a thrilling derby. It was Inter who took an early lead with Marcelo Brozovic capitalised on a defensive error but the equaliser came less than ten minutes later when Rafael Leao finished past Samir Handanovic.

The second half produced yet more drama when Olivier Giroud finished first time to get yet another goal in the derby, and then Leao registered a brace to make it 3-1, with Edin Dzeko’s late goal creating a nervy finish.

Inzaghi spoke to DAZN at the end of the derby game to reflect on the performance from his side and the result, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.

“At the beginning it was a balanced match, then we scored an excellent goal. After the equaliser we had a half-hour blackout that cost us two goals. We scored two beautiful goals, their three goals are goals not to concede. With what we created we would have deserved the same, but that half hour left something to be desired and we could have done better,” he said.

“To win a derby you have to do more, half an hour is not enough. In that empty passage, Milan scored three goals, we only managed to score one.

“Managing the moments is too important for our team, we must not have these blackouts that decided the match against opponents of absolute value such as Milan and Lazio. To score the two goals we had to do a lot of things under construction, they scored 3 goals that were too easy.”

On Dumfries and Barella: “Talking about individuals is difficult for me. We had that moment where we were in control of the game. In the first half I called Dumfries because we had to stay low on their pressing. Before their goal there were no signs.”

On goals conceded: “This is the same team from last year that did not concede a goal for 8 games. The numbers must be read and just watch today’s game: we have a lot of trouble scoring goals, we would have scored more if we hadn’t found Maignan on our way. They got there more easily.”

Is there anything positive that you take home? “Yes, but in this moment it burns me to have lost a derby, it burns me for our fans and for the club, we really cared. We had to do more, tonight there is so much regret and disappointment for having lost the derby.”

  1. Correction Simone: “another derby”

Fair play though, the tactical calls in the match from Inzaghi were good, it was the gambles on selection that cost him

  2. ‘their three goals are goals not to concede.’

Lmao. All goals are goals not to concede for the opposing team. Less excuses, more cries.

    1. He’s only looking for excuses…. All our Goals were absolute classy & brilliant. Inter shouldn’t have scored there first goal also, our defence & midfield duo slept of Lautaro. Glad we won, Milan is 🔴⚫

  3. This dude is just looking for excuses, what does he mean by that our goals were not to be conceded…..Milan have always played beTter than inter in the derby, our issues have been finishing, today we finished our chances and we won deservedly so go cry somewhere else pippo

  4. It is their second defeat in 5 games. If they lose another 3-4 games, then they can forget about the scudetto race.
But we also should be careful next time. The way we stopped playing after the 60th minute could cost us the points.

    1. I wouldn’t say we stopped playing. The introduction of Diaz left a hole in the middle which Inter took advantage until the rest of the game. Fortunately we had Magnian and a little bit of luck on our side.

      1. Agree. I Saw this too, Brahim Diaz gave Inter momentum for Dzeko goal. We lost the possesion in the mid when CDK replaced by Brahim.

CDK was helping in defensive phase with his pressing, usually he take Brozovic to Mark, then CDK always Made himself available for the pass when attacking. And many forget how CDK dribble pass 1 def by nice flair but failed to Made long shot or key pas.

Brahim was good with his dribble but not in teamwork (pressing) & make himself available in building up play. He might be better go RW because ACM’s wingers have primary job to dribble. Milan’s AMC need CDK style.

  5. How are ACM goals easy goal ? It was because of Leao that make it look easy. In fact it was hard for normal people.
1st goal : It was ACM’s high press & Tonali win the ball like usual thanks to ACM’s years effort to be effective & efficient pressing team then he pass it to Leao how finish it well with 1 defender Mark him, show how Leao Polish his finishing this season.

2nd goal : It was Giroud’s smart positioning because he knew Inter Defenders Mark his truft (aeriel duel) so he take 1 step back from ideal heading position & Leao smartly see Giroud’s open space. Only 2 5-stars Players can did this.

3rd goal : Leao was last season MVP, dribble pass 3 Inter Defenders actually very hard but he manage it thanks to his flair. Who Will think dribble pass 3 Inter’s strong defenders Will be easy in this world ?

  6. Simone Inzaghi is overrated. He did ok at Lazio, getting them into the Champions League a couple of times. It was nothing special. Trying to win the Scudetto is a different story. Inter won under Conte then they strengthened the squad and Inzaghi still couldn’t win last season, and won’t win this season either. There are probably 10 managers in Italy who are better than him.

    1. The luck inter had is that they started the season with lesser oponents. Lecce, spezia, cremonese and thats why they have the 3 victory they had, twice they faced the big guns and they were blown away
