CorSport: Gattuso set to stand down – Italy ‘vote for Allegri’ as new coach

The Italian national team will likely go through the process of appointing a new head coach soon, and Massimiliano Allegri’s name is on the list.

As Corriere dello Sport report, Via Allegri – the street on which the headquarters of the FIGC is based – is not just the physical location where increasingly disjointed Italian football will continue to grapple with its shortcomings.

With Gennaro Gattuso’s experience on the wane, to some that street appears as a symbolic path that could lead to the profile of the new coach. Nomen omen, the Latins would have said. Thus, the name of Allegri is beginning to gain ground.

Fans are divided on who should lead the Azzurri. There is the desire to turn to the future on one hand, the temptation to return to the past on the other. In the secret rooms of power there are those who would like to see Roberto Mancini return, the man who won the European Championship.

A big decision to make

We wrote at length last night about the many things Italian football must fix, but a new manager will always remain the biggest topic. Fans and pundits are demanding a strong man in charge, a winning coach with DNA, a manager of champions and someone who makes players better.

There aren’t many of them around. It’s the desire for revolution that winks at the need for serenity, the need for a change that embraces logic in tactical decisions. It will also take a certain charisma to lift the spirits of an entire nation.

Allegri has never been displeased by the idea of becoming Azzurri coach, while Mancini would rush back to Coverciano. The fact that his contract with Al-Sadd is short-term – unlike Allegri’s with Milan (2027 with an option until 2028) – could make things easier for him.

The Azzurri would need a coach by the end of May, when Italy will act as a sparring partner for some national teams preparing for the World Cup. Between late September and early October, the first Nations League games comes against Belgium, Turkey, France and again against Turkey.

Like it or not, the Nazionale need to be fully prepared for those matches. Qualifying for the 2028 European Championship will begin in March 2027.

  1. I don’t know what anyone expected hiring Gattuso as coach… although to be fair he’s not the only problem with the Italy set up…

    1. Maybe he’s the only one who’s up to the job. Considering all the mess. And we all know how Rino loves and lives for challenges.

  2. Make Italy carry her crase go far oo….make them kuku leave Allegri for us. Which one be this? Una wan use ogogoro throwey better expensive wine wey belong to Milan.

  3. If Allegri leaves Milan will be screwed. I hope he declines any offer to coach the NT because the problem is not the coach it is the Italian football federation that is the problem. Until there are changes made to make Serie A competitive there will be no hope for the Italian NT.

If they are serious they would go for Gasperini instead of Allegri.

But if Milan lose Allegri then they should go for Fabergas because he’s doing great work at Como.

Sarri, Conte, Gasperini and Italiano haven’t beaten Fabergas this season.

    1. RedBird’s Milan and Fabregas are a match made in heaven.

Just think about it – Play the most beautiful attacking football an eye can witness while there’s no pressure to deliver Scudetto, just qualify for CL. Buy young talent and groom them for capital gains. I mean we’re already going that Arsenal path, might as well take the next step and be actually named Italian Arsenal.

      1. Haha… Will the club (fans inclusive) be willing to await the results? Como has been growing with no pressure for more than 3 seasons under a particularly system.

      2. Berlusconi’s Milan and Fabregas would have been a match made in heaven. Smacks of the appointment of Sacchi. This Milan? I’m not so sure. They’ll either appoint another dinosaur or someone completely anonymous like Fonseca. In any case, I think Fabregas would actually say no, have his first experience in Europe with Como, and then in 2027 jump over to Barca, Madrid or the PL.

Option B for me is Francesco Farioli, another rising star, or Enzo Maresca.

  4. I said this almost straight after the game the other night (once I’d got over the shock of losing to a truly awful Bosnia side).

Allegri is the archetypal ship-steadier. That’s why I believe the Madrid rumours, and that’s why I think he’ll be top of the list for the Italy job.

The question for him is whether he’s see this as a ‘now or never’ scenario. He’s on to something here at Milan so it comes down to whether he thinks he’ll still be in line for the role in four years (on the basis managers tend to leave after having done a WC and Euros campaign). I’d be shocked if Allegri retires having never managed the national team to be honest.

  5. Let him go, Ac milan goals as come mostly from individual plays from two to three players , Max style is not going to bring trophies, he cant even compete with European teams.
Just imagine we have 3 teams that has depth like inter , 3 teams with technical prowess and speed as como and 2 teams like roma where on earth will Milan be on the table.
We are lucky roma ,napoli, juventus aren’t at their best.
A coach that can’t fully utilise his fire powers .

    Let him go

    1. Max is the most successful coach in Serie A, the man has more Serie A titles than Ancelotti for crying out loud. He knows what he’s doing, or would you rather the chaos of the Portuguese idiots we had last season?

  6. Gatuso is disaster coach, player was great, but coach disaster no tactics nothing. He just talk and talk and ask players play with hart but that maybe enough against san marino.
Big mistake put him at coach,he can be coach seria C

  7. Well, under RedBird Milan’s coaching job is probably the only one that’s somehow less tempting than head coach of Italy, so Allegri leaving would mean another disaster season with a random Fonseca-esque coach. We might as well only watch Italy matches, at least they will improve.
