Journalist believes ‘it will not be easy’ for Milan to keep Maignan

Although Mike Maignan’s current contract does not expire until 2026, AC Milan have already begun talks to offer him a new deal. However, a journalist believes the Rossoneri could struggle to keep the Frenchman at the club.

Milan are keen to offer him a new deal that reflects his value on and off the pitch, and the goalkeeper wants to stay. Therefore, a new contract would make all parties happy.

There are no doubts about the Frenchman’s importance to the club. He is 28 years old, in the prime of his career, and is a leader in the dressing room. Above all, though, he is one of the best in the world in his position, and there are very few that could replace him.

However, there are beliefs that it could not be as simple as that for the club to keep their number one. Speaking to MilanNews, Corriere della Sera journalist Carlos Passerini said a new deal could be difficult.

What are your thoughts about an early renewal for Mike Maignan?

“Maignan’s renewal for Milan is the main one for the next two years. In my opinion, it won’t be easy to keep him. Milan will have to make an effort. We are talking about a goalkeeper who has few comparisons around the world.

Right now, he has a low salary of 3 million. He is asking for around double that plus bonuses, and an effort must be made to keep him, within the limits of what is possible,” he said.

“Beyond the limits of what is possible would not make much sense. The most important thing is to keep Maignan, but if there is no such possibility, a loss to zero [losing him to another club for free in 2026] must be avoided at all costs.”

  1. Based on how injury prone he is, the money he is demanding and how easy and cheap is to replace the position he plays, if he doesn’t accept the 5 mil he is offered, Milan should sell him this summer.
If you get at least 50-60 mil for him, you can replace him with De Gregorio from Monza for about 20 mil and use the other money for a CB or a RB. Milan entire defense will be better just from that sale and proper use of the funds.
Everyone is replaceable on this team. The only player who they will have hard time to replace, based on his characteristics, is Theo. You will not find many, if any, other LBs that bring that much power , speed, and ability to carry the ball across the entirety of the pitch in just a blink.
Everyone else can be replaced with the equal quality player on a cheap transfer and with cheap salary.

    1. You do not make much sense bro, additional of 1$ million would not make them to loose a quality goalkeeper bro, you gonna wait until they loose loose him before you could come to your conclusion that te man you wanted as his replacement is equal, goalkeeping is an important position in the game and the manager understands that better than you and me, and hence would not like loosing such a great goalkeeper. You might think it’s that easy replacing certain player just because you have not loose him yet, in morden football, the coach understands better than you and me who is just a fan and for that reason would not like loosing such an important player. Moreover you talked about him being injury prone, well that happens often to most world class goalkeepers, Real Madrid goalkeeper have not played in this current season, and the way things stands right now, it’s likely he will be coming back towards the end of the current season, but that did not remove from as a world class goalkeeper that he is, If Mike demands for a 10 million a season, I can tell you that there will be do many top European teams that will snap him up immediately without looking back, getting a world class goalkeeper is not as easy as you put it up here.

  2. I strongly disagree, both in the sentense “Everyone is replaceable on this team” and “and how easy and cheap is to replace the position he plays”

In my book he is not replaceable, and it is NOT easy to find good and cheap goalkeepers.

6 million € plus bonuses to keep one of the best goalies in the world, is cheap. The real question is, is ACM big enough for him? I mean, can he win CL with ACM?

  3. yes good thing our current directors isnt in love with the players and will sell if needed yeah?

GK is a luxury we shouldnt be paying the best salary of the squad for one

    1. Omg omg. Subtle Maldini dig.

First, you need to pull your head out of your best friend Giancarlo’s rear end and start seeing what’s actually happening in the world.

Maldini understood that you bring players in for low wages to start unless it’s a free transfer. Then when they prove themselves you need to give an appropriate raise to keep their talent on the team.

Our owners won’t do that and don’t understand that if we had kept Hakan and Kessie for 3 to 5 million total more than we were offering, our team stays intact and we continue acting quality football.

We want to pay low wages for high quality football but that doesn’t last very long when you’re winning and players want more money.

      1. Hakan went behind our back.
Kessié maybe, but it also has to be said that after playing here under Pioli he regressed and ended up in a pension league. He was also not really that good for us pre Pioli era.

This is also my biggest fear when it comes to replacing Pioli, it think a lot of the players that are somewhat his type in terms of characteristics are actually pretty maxed out and we might see a serious drop when changing to a somewhat different style.

    2. @Boulden
      Fav player Dollarumma???
      GK is a luxury???
Are you high? Or just dumb?

A good goalie and an attacker who scores, then you are half-ways with your team.

  4. I’m starting to feel the same about Maignan that I did about Dunnarumma. Like Gigi, Maignan is usually great but it’s broken up with plenty of cringeworthy moments. It would be nice to keep him but if another well-scouted inexpensive goalkeeper is needed then there are many to choose from who can step up and lead Milan.

    1. He’s old and have a high salary. There are good GKs in Serie A that could be signed to replace Mike, if he leaves e.g. Dr Gregorio and Montipo.

      1. He has zero salary bro..that’s why he’s free. And he isn’t old by GK standards (33 is still ok), Sommer is 35 after all and doing incredibly well. De Gea needs to play and the fact that no one in Europe wants to take a punt on him is telling. Either he reduces his demands or stay not playing. I said it facetiously but with a bit of truth. He is technically free. And he can be very, very good. At Man Utd he lost his confidence with some bad decision making but those are fixable. What he does well (reflex saves) you can’t teach.

  5. I feel he wants to leave. Call his bluff. Give him $5M. That’s a big raise. If he actually wants to play for us, he’ll accept. If he refuses, sell him for a hefty profit. Some on here act like he’s irreplaceable. They said the same about Dollarumma…

    1. Nah at them moment Maignan knows that giving him 6m now is cheaper than 5m in January when the new tax laws kick in. We are in no position to bluff. Just accept it and give him his 6m. There are times when you can haggle, now we are not in the position for it.

  6. With a decent defense any gk can be good, a great goalkeeper will not be able to bail you out everytime if your defense is leaking. If I were to choose, beef up our defense and half the battle is won. Mike is a rare breed, but the team still battles with the shaky defense we have, so he is not gonna rescue us forever, especially if teams turn our defenders inside out at will. He will only be as good as the 4 in front of him. So rather sell him if we do not plan on cleaning up our backline.

  7. He won’t sign as he’ll get much more elsewhere and Pioli isn’t the man to lead us to UCL next season.

So, prepare yourselves for the sale of MM16 next summer. Hopefully he’ll be the only key player leaving.

  8. If they’re about their promise, meaning to bring Milan back to where it belongs, then you don’t dismantle your core. You build on it. Add missing puzzles. But they already p*ssed on one project so I don’t buy their promises and I won’t even be disappointed at this stage cause they already showed what they’re all about – buy low sell high, capital gains and profit.
