Kalulu discusses favoured role, areas to improve and mission to become a ‘complete player’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Pierre Kalulu has admitted that he feels like he can improve further and also discussed his role in the defensive department.

When Kalulu arrived at Milan from Lyon on what was technically a free transfer (which involved the payment of a small development fee), not many thought that it would take around a year for him to establish himself as a starter for the Rossoneri.

He has played as a right-back, a centre-back and on the right side of the current three-man defence, and this versatility has helped catch the eye of his country given he is now a mainstay in the France U21 line-up.

Kalulu spoke to the reporters who gathered at a press conference for the French U21 national team and he spoke about his development as a player, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

On being able to improve further: “I think you can always look for something more, you can always improve. Whether it’s the defensive or attacking aspect depending on the position I’m going to play, whether it’s central or wider. Of course, I have many things to improve. I can improve further, in both weaknesses and strengths, I’m the right age.”

On what he can get better at: “In my opinion, I must always be a complete player. If there is a place for me in the team, it will be either central or laterally. But in any case, I am determined to do well, Pioli pushes me on this, telling me to be a solution. No matter where you are, you have to be there.”

On his role: “If you ask me tomorrow if I can play in any position, I’ll tell you it will be possible for me. I won’t start making preferences.”

On where he feels he has improved: “I’ve improved in defensive malice. I think when I reach that level, whether it’s with Milan in the league or the Champions League. I can improve my heading. Defenders of this caliber are all more or less the same, I’ve made the best progress on mindset.”

On Italy: “In Italy you improve on tactics, both in defence and in attack. For my part, when I look at the other games, I see things where you can say to yourself: ‘On this tactical point I’m not making a mistake, but there I was a little more stupid, I made a small mistake there’. Football is seen more from a tactical point of view. We are also making progress on what you see in videos.”
