AC Milan defender Pierre Kalulu believes that the change of formation has helped amid the recent run of bad results, but also thinks the attitude is more important than anything.
Head coach Stefano Pioli made the decision to change from the 4-2-3-1 formation that brought a lot of success – including the Scudetto win – given that his side had a run of seven games without a win and conceded 18 goals in the first seven matches of the new year.
Now the Rossoneri have moved towards a three-man defence and since doing though they have let in one goal over 180 minutes (the 1-0 defeat against Inter and 1-0 win against Torino on Friday), suggesting the team do have more cover.
Kalulu spoke alongside Pioli at the pre-match press conference on the eve of the game against the London club, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
What has changed in this period?
“The most important match I hope is one more important than this one. The change of formation has helped more, but the attitude makes the difference in this period. When everyone is like this, it’s easier for us defenders.”
Are you getting back into shape?
“I was better in the last match, I felt very good against Torino, then I always try to improve myself, every day. I can be even better.”
Yesterday Aldo (Pierre’s brother) scored a great goal. Have you spoken to?
“Fantastic goal, we always watch each other’s games. It wasn’t an easy weekend for us. He gives me some advice that makes the difference and that I always listen to.”
How much does the battle with Perisic and Son stimulate you?
“Everyone knows great players, and they are two great players. We have already played against teams with great players; we will be ready, but I always hope to always play with these players to understand my level.”
Varane has left the French national team, is it an opportunity for you?
“It’s one more opportunity, but we have to play great games against Milan.”
Is it the first time you find yourself in such a period?
“For me, it’s the first time I’ve had a moment in which you don’t win, a period that’s more difficult than the others. Morale, when you lose, is less high. For me, it’s a step that always makes you stronger.”
