Kane makes admission after Spurs exit against Milan: “If we’re brutally honest”

By Oliver Fisher -

Spurs striker Harry Kane has made the honest admission that he does not feel his side deserved to win over the two legs against AC Milan.

In the end a stoic defensive display from Milan both at San Siro and at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium meant that Brahim Diaz’s diving header early on in the first leg was enough to secure a quarter-final berth in the Champions League for the first time since 2011-12.

To many a one-goal lead from the game in Italy did not feel like enough of a lead to take to the English capital – including Harry Redknapp – but Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori did an excellent job ensuring that Kane, Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski went 180 minutes without breaching Ciprian Tatarusanu or Mike Maignan’s goal.

Kane spoke to SPURSPLAY – the official Spurs media channel – after the game to give his reaction to the aggregate defeat.

“We gave it everything, left all our energy and heart out on the pitch and it wasn’t enough. Over the two legs, if we’re brutally honest, I don’t think we can say we deserved to win. Both games were even, and it came down to a decisive goal,” he said.

“I don’t think we were at our best, we had some moments in the game when we needed to be better, good positions on the pitch where maybe other teams would punish you but we’re not quite doing that to the opposition at the moment.

“We’ve got to be more effective especially in the opposition’s final third because we’re getting into good positions and we’re just not taking control of that. Now we are here again against Forest and hopefully we can score a couple of goals and have a big push for the rest of the season. We have no option.

“It’s been a tough week for everyone, the fans especially, and we just need to push on now. The top four is the only thing we can play for, we did it last year with a strong finish at the end of the season so we have to keep fighting and see where we can go.”
