CM: Leao’s evolution evident in numbers – Milan’s polished gem ready for a top contract

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan know that they have a top tier talent on their hands in Rafael Leao, who is exploding in his third season with the Rossoneri shirt.

Calciomercato.com reports how the Portugal international has significantly increased his contribution in the final third, and the numbers show it. In the first 25 rounds of this season compared to last season he has more shots on goal (56 versus 28), more opportunities (23 to 17) and he has 58 successful dribbles this season compared to 33 last season.

His expected assists have dropped significantly from 4.34 in 2020-21 to 1.96 in the current campaign, while his expected goals went from 5.64 to 4.91 and his ratio of shots to shots on target is also worse: 20 out of 43 last season to 22 out of 56 this year.

What that shows that there is room for improvement, but Leao has also shown application in the defensive phase: 8 intercepted balls and 58 balls recovered compared to 4 and 62 respectively last season. He is on 110 tackles already this campaign and he hit 116 total in 2020-21.

Milan knew they had a gem and they have been polishing him over the last two seasons, believing in him and protecting him in his growth path. Now, they are ready to arm him for the future with a top contract.

  1. If he only get offer around 3mil to 4 mil, I will be pissed. He is an attacker, he scored goals, he created chances and assist. Goals win the match, no matter how strong your defense is if you can not score it will ended up in draw.
I think he deserved similar with what they last offered to kessie (around 5 – 6.5mil).
