Leao believes he is ‘more responsible’ and that summer window has ‘raised the level’

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao has admitted that he now feels more responsible having taken the No.10 shirt at AC Milan, and also stated his belief that the squad has got stronger.

Milan made it nine points from nine available to begin the season as they beat Roma 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on Friday night, and it was thanks to an excellent display inside the first hour.

The first goal didn’t take long to come as Rui Patricio was adjudged to have brought down Ruben Loftus-Cheek inside the area and Olivier Giroud converted his third penalty of the season to make it 1-0.

Early in the second half, a cross from Davide Calabria found its way to Rafael Leao who was waiting on the far side of the box and managed to somehow hook a volley in off the far post to make it 2-0.

Fikayo Tomori’s red card after getting a second yellow made things interesting, as did Spinazzola’s deflected late shot to halve the deficit, but in the end Milan come home with three huge points.

Leao spoke to Sky after the game to reflect on an important win, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“It was a goal I’ve been looking for for three years. It was nice to win here, it was difficult to win in Rome, also because of the atmosphere. We have three more points to stay first in the table,” he said.

On taking the No.10: “I knew it was an important number and today I feel more responsible for having this shirt, I took the 10 without pressure to demonstrate how much good I have already done.”

On the team: “Milan are always a strong team, every year the club tries to recruit the best players. The club have done a great job, the players who have arrived are of quality and have raised the level.”

On what he has improved: “I am more responsible with and without the ball. With the ball I can make the difference, but without the ball I have to defend better. I have to thank Pioli who makes me observe where I can improve.”

On Pulisic: “I always try to help everyone, I know he has great qualities. Even when I have the ball in the area I try to serve him in the area.”

  1. Dude scored an overhead volley with the defender almost dragging him to the ground.
He’s so much more dangerous this year with a proper RW.
