GdS: Leao expects verdict on €16.5m sentence within a fortnight as renewal is paused

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are hoping to lock down the long-term future of Rafael Leao in the coming days and weeks with a contract extension, but a key issue must be resolved first.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports how negotiations have been open for a few months now between involving his agent Jorge Mendes and the Rossoneri management over a renewal and there are still some things to agree on especially related to bonuses, but it is clear that eventually an agreement will arrive.

It should be announced in March, as Leao will go from his current salary of €1.4m net per season to €4m plus bonuses and the Rossoneri will be protected from foreign clubs who have shown an interest.

He received an award for reaching 100 appearances for the club at Milanello on Wednesday and he marked that game with a goal against Sampdoria to send Milan top.

Amid the smiles though there is an issue to be tackled related to something that happened a few years ago, namely the decision to terminate his contract with Sporting CP after an attack on the training ground from ultras, and the claim of the Portuguese side that they are entitled to damages.

Leao was sentenced in the first instance to pay €16.5m to Sporting after he made a free transfer to Lille by unilaterally terminating his contract, and the Lisbon Court of Appeal has already rejected a first appeal by the player, while now the ruling of the Court of Arbitrian for Sport is awaited, which should arrive within a couple of weeks.

Once this aspect has been clarified, it will also be possible to proceed with the signing of his new Milan contract.
