Di Marzio: Leao ‘wants to stay’ but €19m fine ‘complicates Milan’s plan’ – the latest

By Oliver Fisher -

Gianluca Di Marzio believes that Rafael Leao and his entourage will try and get the highest salary possible with the Sporting CP fine hanging over the negotiations.

Speaking on Sky, Di Marzio (via MilanNews) gave an update on the situation regarding the negotiation for the renewal of Leao’s contract, stating that the fine ‘complicates Milan’s plan’ despite the fact that he ‘wants to stay’.

Despite this, Leao’s will is ‘a different matter’ because he ‘needs monetise as much as possible from this situation so that he can afford to pay this 19 million euro debt’, which means he will ‘try to get the highest salary possible’.

It is ‘practically impossible’ for Milan or for any Serie A club to match the salaries that Premier League clubs can dish out, so the Rossoneri must make an ‘important effort’ on their part and Leao will also have to try understand that, by staying at Milan he will be able to ‘grow even more and maybe go on to earn much more in the following years at the other clubs’.

Di Marzio states that it could reward Leao to be patient for a little longer to find the right timing to go to a top Premier League club.

  1. It’s a déjà vu… Sell while the price and time is right. We cannot afford to loose Leao for free, money gotten from his sale will go a long way to strengthen the squad. A word is enough for the wise, the management should stop this wishful thinking.

    1. Yeah it seem Maldini and Massara has learnt nothing, just sell and reinvest the money on Doku, Mudryk and possibly Auora the French AM, that will fix Milan trident position , three good players are better than one.

  2. The suggestion that Leao stays for a couple of years with AC Milan to be able to ask for more money from some premier club in the future is really hurtful to all milan fans. If leao is after more money, let him go at the right price and to he.. with him and all his entourage …..

  3. Remember maldini was not so optimistic with leao in his interview I mean he was normal so I don’t feel like di marzio saying he wants or he doesn’t I don’t think these things matter here

  4. I love Rafa. I think he is our best player. Goodbye to the Scudetto race if he leaves in January, and we’d be at a risk of not even making the top 4 without him.

However, I’m slowly growing tired of this thing. Maybe we should sell him after all and use the money to get a decent replacement and fix some other problems we have. Enough is enough.

  5. Yes I agree with above ,if Rafael leao does go then yes we won’t win the scuddeto this season ,,,he works so well with Olivier Giroud, and when they are together we look a very balanced threatening team ..Goals will come from Olivier but needs the flair of leao around him ..So I hope we can keep him until the season end .
Then of course consider selling him which seems inevitable, and again also said ,the money from the sale if used wisely could perhaps buy 2 or 3 quality players ..For this season if he does stay then we can win the scuddeto again ..

  6. everytime we have transfer drama we would lose so many games. at this point just sell leao. if he flops we can just buy cheap the next year just like lukaku from chelsea lol
