L’Equipe: Milan and Toulouse could encounter European issue due to RedBird ownership

There could be a rather interesting situation involving AC Milan and Toulouse if the latter win their cup final tomorrow, a report claims.

L’Equipe (via Calciomercato.com) write that Toulouse will contest the final of the Coupe de France tomorrow night against holders Nantes in what will be their first appearance in the final of the cup for 13 years.

Toulouse are owned by RedBird Capital, and given that they are also Milan’s owners then it would jeopardise the two clubs’ participation in Europe because UEFA regulations prevent two teams that share ownership from participating in the same competition.

However, there are also cross-competition problems. For example, if Milan went to the Champions League and were eliminated in the group stage, they could still meet the French club in the Europa League knockouts.

This is the UEFA regulation, cited in article 5: “No natural or legal person may have control or exercise influence over more than one club participating in UEFA club competitions.”

However, the ban imposed by UEFA can be circumvented, as demonstrated by the precedent of RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, who participated in the Champions League in the 2017-18 season and also faced each other in the Europa League in 2018-19.
