Any notion that switching plans and aiming to build a new stadium at La Maura would be easier for AC Milan is quickly being disproven, or so it seems.
According to a report from Corriere della Sera (via Calciomercato.com), Milan are continuing to work towards a new stadium at the La Maura racecourse area, but the Rossoneri’s mission is blocked with new obstacles.
The project has reached the European Union because city councillor Enrico Fedrighini has presented a complaint regarding the violation of the ‘EU Soil Strategy for 2030’ directive, because of the plan to construct the stadium in the South Agricultural Park.
Fedrighini wrote to the European Commissioner for the Environment – Virginijus Sinkevicius – to activate ‘all the necessary measures to prevent and avoid the irreversible transformation of the protected area’.
The councillor denounces the risk, in the event of construction of the 70,000-seat stadium, of a ‘derogation promoted by public authorities (Municipality and Region) with respect to a regulation aimed at protecting the soil and guaranteeing ecosystem services’.
The response from the European Commissioner is expected in 90 days and if he agrees, it could create a new obstacle for Milan to overcome. In the meantime, Alessandro De Chirico has filed a motion to convene an extraordinary session of the City Council within 20 days to discuss the stadium.
And this is why Italy will forever remain behind in football infrastructure updates
Oh boy. Here we go. Not sure why we’re still trifling with areas that even hint of public lands. The Sesto San Giovanni site is private land, and near public transportation and roads. I just can’t understand why we’re still wasting time on difficult sites like La Maura.
No. The area is inside of San Siro municipal so the price is most likely higher than Sesto.
The idea is to build the stadium near the old one (about 1.5 kms?) so that fans wont face too much difference when going to stadia, which will happen more or less with Sesto.
If La Maura proved to be too complicated in next 1-3 months then I hope Milan will choose Sesto.
