Loftus-Cheek explains what playing for Milan means and how he was convinced to join

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has stressed his belief that joining AC Milan last summer was the right decision for him to make as he has hit the ground running at his new club.

It was no doubt very difficult for Loftus-Cheek to decide to leave Chelsea during the 2023 summer window having been there for pretty much his entire career, being a Cobham graduate.

However, his career had perhaps stalled a bit as he found himself outside the plans of recent managers at Stamford Bridge and so the right opportunity arrived for him to try something different.

He linked up with ex-Chelsea team-mate Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic as well as his close friend Fikayo Tomori, and it would be fair to say things are going well for the Englishman as he has seven goals this season with six coming in 2024.

Loftus-Cheek was interviewed by UEFA about his decision to join Milan during the summer window and he revealed that he was convinced by some conversations he had before.

“The opportunity arrived and I think it was an excellent opportunity to take. I spoke to Pioli before arriving at Milan and explained to me how he likes to play, what his ambitions are for the season and how I could be useful to the team,” he said.

“It was a conversation that I really enjoyed and I was very enthusiastic. The club is great, then the stadium, the history of the club, it was tempting to come to Milan.

“And then Tomori was already here, I spoke to him before coming and he spoke very well about the club. So it was a good opportunity for me to come and play here.

“My team-mates are brilliant. They are all fantastic, they are very talented. And obviously the coaching staff are also excellent. Then the stadium and the fans. It’s an incredible atmosphere when we play at San Siro.

“Even in away matches our fans make themselves heard, they give us all their support which is always very strong. It’s really nice to play when it’s like this.

“As soon as you put on the Milan shirt, for the history of the club, for the many great players who have worn it and for what this club has won, you just want to make Milan proud.”
