Longo: Conceicao ‘will pay’ for delay as Milan’s win against Udinese turns into regret

AC Milan secured a big win against Udinese last night and while it allowed the fans to smile for once, that smile quickly turned into regret, as highlighted by Daniele Longo.

Scoring two goals in each half, the Rossoneri comfortably brought back all three points from Udine to Milano. While the start of the game was a close affair, the Rossoneri comfortably took over after the first goal and showed their true quality, after a very poor season overall.

In his article for Calciomercato.com this morning, Daniele Longo highlighted just how impressive the win won, though it also inevitably has increased the regret. If Sergio Conceicao had adapted from the start, the situation could have been a lot better by now.

“Milan kept a clean sheet after 9 games, with Pavlovic finally convincing as a centre-back to the left, after a few too many runs forward as a centre-back. He convinced us by playing, above all, on the counter-attacks.

“The enthusiasm for the four goals scored, however, immediately turned into regret for what could have been and wasn’t. Milan have important technical values for a comfortable Champions League position with peaks even for the Scudetto.

“Sergio Conceicao found the key two months late because he wasn’t able to immediately read the characteristics and difficulties of a technically very good but at the same time mentally fragile group.

“The Portuguese coach will pay for this delay with his farewell at the end of the season because, probably, he didn’t work as much as he could on the players’ minds.

“He had to adapt and improve but instead, for two months, he demanded that the team adapt to him and his harsh rules,” he writes.

The only hope left for Milan is to win the Coppa Italia, which would restore some pride, but the Champions League exit and the fact they won’t qualify for the next edition (most likely) is a tough pill to swallow indeed.

  1. Why should he ‘pay’ its a good thing he found a solution and if he goes on a run now there’s even less reason to sack him

Or do journos think switching managers every season and rolling the dice would work better? There isnt even many talented managers available.

    1. We can’t blame him, the team has been suffering for way too long, even from Pioli’s last season… What I like about him is that he doesn’t hide from his mistakes, he’s not stubborn and never throws players under the bus. I’d keep him and build something for next season with more additions based on the playstyle. Enough of this ‘we are starting a new era’ bulls*it

      1. Pioli struggle because they took away his dm’s and replace them with cm’s that weren’t good at defending. But if conceicao go on a run it would not make sense replacing him. Enough of this ‘we are starting a new era’ bulls*it. FACTS!!!

      2. There was a time like this pioli found a win wa
y,a consistent, when he was almost sack, then the management kept him. If this management would be fair, they should do the same for Sergio conceicao.

  2. I have been telling everyone here that Sergio isn’t the problem…

with proper CBs like Coppola and Commuzzo and a midfielder like Ricci, we can finally balance the squad, not to mention Alexis homecoming…

All that is left are proper subs for Puli and Leao and we are golden for next season…

    1. If they continue to play like that, beat Inter and win the Copa Italia,I see no reason why he should not be given another chance.I will only replace him with Conte, Gasperini or Ancelleoti

      1. 100%, but I don’t think under this management any of them would be happy to come to Milan (maybe Papa Carlo and I would be the happiest with that decision, but it’s also a rather short term).

Also, Conte would 100% prefer a Juve reunion or Roma, since the latter he can control the transfers and not some money-ball BS

    2. I don’t know, the fact that it took him like 4 monthes to try a 3-4-3 and he did so probably just because Walker is injured is actually not a good argument for Conceição.
Furthemore, we only played one game with this 3-4-3, we still don’t know how it will look like against Atalanta, Inter and Bologna.
Conceição might make a good argument for himself only if he manages a strong finish to the season.
However we might already have a hint on what system we should base our next purchases on.

      1. he came during the worst part of the season and still won Super Cup…

4-4-2 is his bread and butter, if something the problem should be the management… 3-4-3 was something that he only deployed after he was given 2 weeks of free training with his team…

It’s not a bad sign at all… with pre-season under him this problem would have never existed

    3. Please no more Coppola / Ricci fan boy. We already have Bondo on his position bro. Beside that the cost would be heavy for Milan these day

      1. we have 3 midfielders (Bondo, Fofana, Tiji – Adli would have been a good option for depth) plus Musah… in 3-4-3 he will be tested as wingback. like it or not we will need 1-2 more midfielders… RLC is a must sell, 15-20M would be something EPL teams can play for sure…

Him, Alexis, Theo, Jimenez and jury is still out for Sottil

Walker in recent interview said that he might go back to Premier League and would also more likely to play RCB than RM at his age…

  3. Journalist and pundits now lack ideas, respect and professionalism, any sensible person knows Sergio was never the problem, and it takes time and effort to build a project, but some really disrespectful things have been said about Sergio and his future by both the Press and Pundits, both of them claim to love the club, but they are the first to deride, say negative things and even suggest Coaches while he is still on the job, that’s not professional, they have been plotting to install Allegri, who is a winner, but lacks the courage to win in Europe, and has refused to open his mind towards improving his timid approach to games, the logical thing to do is support Sergio, and then confirm him for next season, we need him, and the stability the club needs

  4. Sérgio Conceição should be sacked. The team’s improved performance yesterday clearly showed what we’ve all suspected — he’s too stubborn to adapt his tactics. It was obvious that adding an extra defender would bring more stability and ease the defensive burden on our attacking players, yet he refused to make that adjustment until now. His unwillingness to evolve is holding the team back.

    1. it’s not as easy to do that without proper time…

We had 2 games during the first month per week and then after the all the doom and gloom the team needed the time to bounce back… as he said in his interview he’s not a magician to suddenly make this team understand what he wants from them… why do you think pre-seasons are important?!

this happened the week after the international football was over…

  5. Lets wait for next games , I think it’s fair if he stay, he deserved more time. But it really also depends on how we go until the end of season, not just Inter and Coppa, but also Atalanta, Bologna and Roma are our next games … if there will be obvious game changing, more games like last one and most importent wins , he should stay, because last game looks like he really find what was missing all matches this season..

  6. One swallow doesn’t make a summer (or a spring!). Whilst the team played well yesterday and earned an impressive win, it was against an average side below us in the standings. We won’t know if things have really improved until ACM take on Atalanta and Inter in coming fixtures.

I agree that Conceicao hasn’t been the root cause of ACM’s decline this season. It’s the absent owner and his amateurish management team who have been primarily culpable. If Conceicao can produce a string of victories and end the campaign on a strong note, he should be allowed to stay and build on his good work. Continuity is important.

    1. Yes that’s is what i think. And plus he won Supercoppa and if he manage to somehow win also coppa , he should stay for next season. I know we will miss CL, but still, I don’t remember when we last win two trophies in one seasons

    2. I disagree with your statement that ACM won because it was an average team, NO! Besides, our major problem this season have been the average team and lower teams that play a low block defense style. The bigger teams have never dealt us a big blow this season, so I would say if ACM could beat Udinese (masters of low block) convincingly like this and still maintain our playing prowess with the big teams as it has been, we will finish strong.

      1. Udinese is an average team. But you make a good point: they’re precisely the kind of opponent ACM has struggled to beat this season. So the result last Friday was significant.

What ACM needs is consistency – putting a string of victories together against both lowly and top sides, like Inter have done. We haven’t turned the corner as a team until we do that. Let’s see what happens on Wednesday.

    3. This.

Reserve reaction until after Atalanta and Inter. If we win both matches, Sergio is probably worth keeping. If we go on and win the Coppa and win 3 of our final matches in the league, we keep him.

But for now, this was just one nice win over a poor team below us with nothing to play for.

  7. U r supporting mediocrity.. d fact we won Udinese does not mean we have turned d corner..even Fonseca defeated inter n Madrid… Conceciao lacks technics to build a solid team… Pioli also had some good runs..
