‘Like Tonali’s goal in Rome’ – Longoni compares Modric’s winner to Scudetto year

Scoring late goals is something which AC Milan have done regularly this year, and the latest came thanks to Luka Modric.

There have been several instances this year where Milan have left it late. In fact, they are among the top teams when it comes to rescuing points past the 90th minute. Whilst it was not that late this time, Modric’s goal was massive for the season.

If nothing else, it means the Scudetto gap remains manageable at eight points, with a game in hand. However, it is also the first win against a promoted side this season, which cannot be overlooked.

Whilst there have been several late goals this year, Andrea Longoni compared the maestro’s winner to one from a previous season, the one where Sandro Tonali scored to beat Lazio, and his reasoning was clear as he wrote for MilanNews.

“The victory against Pisa was hard-fought, certainly not the result of a stellar performance, and the coach was critical of it in his press conference. It’s a match that will fuel the usual “playing like this, where do you want to go?” refrain, it must be said, that we’ve been hearing since August. And Milan are still there today.

“Luka Modric’s goal is poetry, for the man who scored it, for how he scored it, for the significance it could have. It was like Sandro Tonali’s goal in Rome against Lazio in the Scudetto year. Both players literally went for the goal, displaying incredible character.

“The Croatian’s goal probably won’t ultimately have the same significance as the one scored a few years ago at the Olimpico, but Milan has a duty to try. In this sense, Wednesday’s match against Fabregas’ Como will be extraordinarily important in putting further pressure on Inter.

“A win would have an incredible impact on their position in the table and their position at the top of the table.”

That goal had a big impact on the Scudetto, and it could be the same for Modric’s if this season has another twist yet.

  1. well .if we win the next game we are back to 5 points behind and i have to say we really should of been 3 points behind since inter were being dominated by juventus before the red card that might of cost us the scudetto. ultimately we wil still need to perfect in the last 13 games and if inter progress more and more in champions league nd coppa italia . hoopefully will get them to become tired and drop points

    1. Juventus were robbed with that sending off! It shows that no other team will have the same level help from the officials in the way Inter does.
Still hoping for the second star!

        1. Totally agree. Inter are cheating their way to the finish line and strongly believe they will not win the scudetto because karma is a b!tch and they will have a lot of regrets like in previous years when the loss in 2021/2022 to Milan and when they loss to Napoli last season on the final day.
