Longoni: Why Conte is ‘the right man’ to lead Milan in post-Pioli era

By Isak Möller -

As Stefano Pioli’s farewell at the end of the season more or less has been confirmed, many AC Milan fans are pushing for Antonio Conte to replace him. In his latest editorial, Andrea Longoni has elaborated on that thought.

The defeat against Roma on Thursday evening seemingly confirmed that Pioli’s era at the club has come to an end. Gerry Cardinale will be in Milano for the derby and after the game, as reported by credible sources, he will decide Pioli’s replacement along with the management.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, the journalist Andrea Longoni shared his thoughts on the situation and urged the Rossoneri to make a move for Antonio Conte. The Italian wants to return to Serie A and would be willing to take on the Milan project.

“Now comes the opportunity to really show what they [RedBird] really want to do with Milan. Are we talking about a club that aims to win, or one that makes a living clinching top four? We find ourselves at a crossroads and above all, that concerns the choice of the next manager.

“If we questioned 100 sporting directors, 100 would answer that the right man is named Antonio Conte. Thiago Motta would have been an excellent alternative, but stalling while deciding on Pioli has apparently placed him out of reach.

“Other profiles, especially foreign ones, who have never been to Italy, would be yet another gamble: exactly what Milan doesn’t need,” he stated.

Conte is a demanding coach and this appears to be the main worry of the Rossoneri management. They want a manager who can be very aligned with the directors and the scouting department, which is something that Conte perhaps would lack.

  1. I am not sure why they are not looking at Arne Slot, he is cheap, has worked well with young players, he is Dutch (most important).

  2. For all his bravado and winning mentality, Conte remains a very limited tactical, he is a one trick pony, apart from that, his erratic behaviour is also a problem, he lacks the confidence and courage to guide us to European success, we the fans need to understand the kind of management we have, we need a young European or Italian coach, who will be made to understand he needs to focus on youth, goth the ones on loan and in our youth teams, that’s the best way, players now who are bought with huge money don’t necessarily perform, but young local players and the ones in our youth teams will give their heart out if they are given an opportunity, just look at Barca throughout the years, and look at their present squad, we need a total reset, if not Conte will come and burn the whole house down, why do you think Juve went for Motta, instead of bringing him back….

  3. I don’t understand Conte rumors. It seems obvious that Conte cannot work with Leao. The only way is if Leao is sold this summer, and that would work only if we already sold him.

I also don’t see management hire him with a 9-10 million salary and other requests. Also his CL and EL runs are pretty bad. I also don’t see a lot of teams lined up offering to hire Conte.

People are making him the savior and he’s far from it.

    1. I think leao would do just fine as a SS in conte formations. And eu runs are all about luck and daily form.. it’s not like we did any better with pioli in Europe.

      Saviour? Do we need one?
A coach that can bring the 20th scudeto? Very likely. I sooner see us getting the 20th with conte than any of the other names we being linked atm

      1. I just wonder what the Conte effect is on the likes of Leao… Beat more tactical responsibilities into him, so he’s more consistent if he wants to play? Or completely mess him up where he is a shadow of himself? Same with Theo and so forth…

Conte demands a lot of his players, and honestly our team can use some hard love coming out of Pioli’s fatherly-love tenure.

But the con is always the overall effect of Conte on a club, his demands and his inability to develop the younger players which is what Milan seems to want to do (although you couldn’t tell by how often pioli chose to use the youngsters)

        1. Leao would probably crumble under Conte, hehe. Benched within a month.. but that’s football, if he doesn’t have what it takes he doesn’t have what it takes. Pioli has spoiled him rotten.

True conte boi prefers experienced players, that’s probably the main reason for Milan being reserved about going for him.. we do want to go into development route.
You know 2 years ago I’d never wanted to see lord conte at Milan. Funny how life happens

  4. Seems like maybe Milan are re-evaluating having another Italian coach take over at Milan?

Most of the names thrown out are foreigners. Maybe there’s something to be said about that. Italians have certain flaws about them and management seem to want a more Euro Milan.

    1. Historically most of our successes happened while being coached by Italians, so maybe that played a part.
The problem though is that most of the good Italian coaches I can think of are already in the twilight of their career. Unless we think of a young and unproven but also promising coach.

  5. How much is Conte’s camp paying Longoni for these constant b.s. articles trying to push him onto Milan? It’s gotten ridiculous.

  6. One cannot help but question the ambitions of Cardinale…the youth factor as a requirement is beginning to look suspicious. Do they want a coach that aligns with their budget amd pull a rabbit out of a hat everytimr or a coach that can give us a functioning team. If Conte is out of reach I’m sure Sarri would be able to give us a team with some identity. We don’t need experiments again. Period.

  7. Leao, chukwueze dont fit in conte’s team, if you talk of ss role, it means leao, chuk, pulisic, okafor, jovic will all be fighting for one position, to partner the true striker, this team is not build for conte, and we all know what conte will bring, its boring
