GdS: Maignan arrives and makes Milan forget Donnarumma – the numbers that show it

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan said goodbye to Gianluigi Donnarumma last summer but have now got a new hero between the posts in Mike Maignan, who has been very impressive statistically.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports how Maignan arrived with little doubt surrounding his credentials having just been crowned champion of France with Lille in a season during which he racked up 21 clean sheets, while Donnarumma got 14 before winning the European Championship with Italy.

In the first 25 rounds of the current season, Maignan has managed to beat what Donnarumma did in the last six seasons, if we take into consideration the same time period. The French goalkeeper has an enviable average goals conceded per game of 0.84, while last year Gigio closed at 1.12.

If we talk about goals conceded in the first 25 games of the last two seasons, Maignan is at 19 games and 16 goals conceded (he missed a few rounds due to a wrist injury), with 24 games and 27 goals let in by Gigio. Maignan has saved 76.1% of shots faced (51) against 71.3% out of 69 for Donnarumma.

At his new club PSG, Donnarumma has been locked in a battle for a starting spot with Keylor Navas meaning he has started 16 games – 10 in Ligue 1, 4 in the Champions League and 2 in the French Cup – conceding 10 goals. He has amassed 47 saves with a percentage of 82.5%, with 8 clean sheets.

Maignan has 9 clean sheets for the season, of which 8 came in Serie A. His save percentage is 74.2% (69 total), showing he has truly made sure Milan have not felt Donnarumma’s absence.

  1. Maldini and co have done a great job so far given the conditions. Definitely Magnan is their succces. Further, they also made a clear statement by not renewing Donnaruma. If they renew Leao they are wizards

  2. One of the best replacements and honestly I was really happy they handled it like this. The whole point is, if you don’t really want to play here and the only reason is money, goodbye!

  3. im really interested on how they found this maignan guy. i have never heard of him before milan, and hes playing superb nowdays.

u can see how he trembles when hes still new in milan. but now, i guess we dont have to worry about goalkeeper for like 7 years

  4. Mike Is far better than Donnaruma in all angles, there is not one place that he doesn’t come out with upper hand.

If Donnaruma was still here, we would have lost the derby and one of his errors would have cost a match or two.

Mike is truly magical, he is my number One in Europe…..
