Official: Makkelie will officiate Chelsea-Milan – the precedents for both teams

By Oliver Fisher -

UEFA have announced the referee designation for the game between Chelsea and AC Milan scheduled for Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, the referee for the game will be the Dutchman Danny Makkelie, with his assistants Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries as the linesmen and the fourth official will be Allard Lindhout. The VAR room will be directed by Dennis Higler and Pol van Boekel.

There is only one previous precedent in which Makkelie has officiated a game involving Milan and that was last December 7 in a game the Rossoneri lost at San Siro against Liverpool by a score of 2-1, ending their hopes of qualifying for the knockouts.

The Dutch referee has directed three matches in which Chelsea were involved: a 6-0 win in 2014 against Maribor and two draws against Atletico Madrid in 2017 and Real Madrid in last season’s semi-final first leg (1-1).
