Maldini discusses ‘mix between young and old’ and the victory that was ‘worth double’

AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini has reflected on the last Serie A season and spoke about the balance of the squad that he and the management have constructed .

Maldini was interviewed by DAZN as part of a special programme on the last Serie A season and he began by talking about the importance in having a mix between young and experienced players.

“Having a mix between young and old is the strength of every team. A team must be basically young, but young people need to have guides to grow, who are the most experienced players,” he said (via MilanNews).

Not many had Milan down to win the league last season especially when they encountered numerous injury crises just as they had in the 2020-21 campaign, but the Rossoneri showed their collective strength to battle through them and still emerge on top.

“We resumed after the Christmas break against Roma with 10 players out with either injuries or being Covid positivit. Perhaps that was the most delicate moment, but we overcame it.”

One of the turning points of the season was when Milan went away to Napoli in what was close to being a must-win game in the title race, and Olivier Giroud’s solitary goal settled it.

“When you win a direct match against a rival like Napoli it’s a victory that is worth double,” he said.
