GdS: Maldini fails to convince Leao – disagreement over clause causes tension

By Oliver Fisher -

An agreement over the renewal of Rafael Leao seemed to be getting closer but instead things have slowed down due to one key issue, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) report this morning that the release clause is the latest obstacle in talks over extending Leao’s current deal which expires in June 2024. The winger would like to lower from the current €150m to €80m but the Milan management are against the idea and instead would have considered the possibility of eliminating the clause altogether and relying on the price of the market.

The paper even speaks of a ‘rupture’ between Leao and Milan because the directors are tired of these continuous hurdles, given they would like to close this affair as soon as possible. Paolo Maldini spoke to Leao personally to try and influence things but the meeting did not have the desired effect.

The result is the silence of the last few days which has complicated even more a soap opera which seems to be endless. Milan’s on-field fortunes are not helping, neither is the fine owed to Sporting CP.

Without a renewal in the coming months, in the summer the Rossoneri will have to seriously evaluate the possibility of selling the former Lille man to avoid losing him in 2024 for nothing, and Premier League teams remain at the window.

    1. There nothing Maldini could do. It’s not about where he wants to play, but where he can get the highest wage, the biggest signing bonus, and the biggest commission for his dad and lawyer as a free agent. He never intended to be re-sign or be sold.

      1. Fabrizio Romano reported last summer that after the Chelsea offer, he heard from Leao’s camp that they left it to Milan to decide if they wanna accept the offer or not, and that he was OK either way. So why are people keep pushing this nonsense that Leao never intended to be sold.
He is telling you he wants out, by not accepting your offers. Why can everyone see this except Maldini and his fans?

        1. That offer was made too late in the transfer window for us to find a suitable replacement. He knew maldini would never accept.

  1. Just sell him, he clearly doesn’t want to be here and it could be part of the recent fall from grace of the whole team..Sell to city for 50m plus Julian Alvarez,

  2. Here we go again. Please netfix you must be make movie about this,
    Chapter 1 (2021) : Donna feat Calha
    Chapter 2 (2022) : Kessie feat Romagnoli
    Chapter 3 (2023) : Leao

  3. Milan management needs to change mentality if you can not renew the player sell him to avoid more losses but it is as if they did not learn from Dona, Hakan, Kessie, Roma cases

  4. I can understand Leao, come on have a look at Cardinale’s attitude. How to convince him to stay if the club shows no ambition?
