AC Milan face a battle to secure the renewal of Rafael Leao as Manchester City and Chelsea are both interested in signing him, a report claims.
According to what is being reported by Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), Leao is attracting the interest of the two Premier League giants after continuing the form from last season that ended up earning him the crown of Serie A MVP.
In the summer Chelsea asked for Leao but in actual fact Milan never received an official proposal, so directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara only learned of the interest of the London club through the winger’s entourage.
Now, Manchester City have expressed interest in the Portugal international as Pep Guardiola holds the player in very high esteem, but the Citizens have not presented an official offer yet either.
Despite the eyes of England and their financial power, Milan are actually growing in confidence that they will secure the extension Leao’s contract, which is set to expire in 2024. The player is grateful that Milan were patient with him, allowed him to establish himself and to explode.
The Rossoneri were operating under a €4.5m net per season salary ceiling (per player) but the paper states that they are willing to offer €6m for Leao as they know high-level players should be paid more.
To date, an agreement for the extension of Leao’s contract with Milan has not yet been found because the demands of his entourage have changed and the request is now €7m. There is also the knot to untie regarding the €19m fine owed to his former club Sporting CP.
The presence of several different people in the negotiations does not help because there is Jorge Mendes – Leao’s agent – plus a French lawyer who is a friend of the player’s father, who is trying to help him from a legal point of view.
The ideas of Leao’s representatives do not always coincide and in recent months there have been moments of confusion. Milan though know that the former Lille man wants to stay and they are now accelerating renewal attempts before the World Cup in Qatar.
