Official: Marciniak will referee Dortmund vs. Milan – the precedents

By Oliver Fisher -

UEFA has appointed Polish referee Szymon Marciniak as the official for the match scheduled tonight in the Champions League between Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.

Marciniak refereed the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France on 18 December 2022 in Qatar, the 2018 UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid and the 2023 Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter.

He is regarded as one of the best referees in the world as shown by the fact he gets the biggest games. Marciniak will be assisted by all compatriots: Sokolnicki and Listkiewicz will be the linesmen, the fourth official will be Musiał while the VAR chief and assist will be Kwiatkowski and Lasyk.

Milan have had three games officiated by Marciniak: a win against Dinamo Zagreb last year in the UCL group stages, a draw against Napoli in the quarter-final second leg and a defeat in 2021 at Anfield against Liverpool.

There is only one precedent involving Borussia Dortmund, dating back to the 2016 season which saw the Bundesliga draw with Real Madrid 2-2 in the Champions League.
