Genoa sensation and a No.9 – Milan’s ideas for the summer [Bonus article]

The January transfer window is not even over yet and we are already talking about the summer. A bit of a bummer, we know, but at least AC Milan do have some ambitious plans for next season. Although there is a lot of loose speculation going around, there are a few links that can be considered more ‘solid’ than others. Especially regarding the No.9 role.

The season has not panned out the way we as fans, and the Milan management, expected after the Rossoneri managed to win seven of their first eight games in the league. The reasons behind this have been discussed at great length on the website and here on substack, so let’s leave it at that. Instead, we will focus on the summer and what to expect.

Gudmundsson, Moncada and Zirkzee

Some key positions will be reinforced, that is already 100% certain, and the No.9 role is one of them. A purchase for this position has been postponed to the summer, when Milan will have more spending power, so there are a couple of interesting targets on their radar. Not to mention the attack as a whole, so let’s take a look at that department specifically.

Adli, Giroud and Pioli’s common denominator [Bonus article]

AC Milan managed to beat Roma rather convincingly in front of a sold-out San Siro on Sunday evening, finding the back of the net three times. Although Theo Hernandez’s strike was indeed brilliant, we would like to highlight another thing from the game and that is the fight for survival.

Just as we have seen a lot of youth players shine with the first team this season, there are a few figures that have struggled in their own right. The first is obviously Stefano Pioli, who has received a bunch of criticism since the start of the season, and another one is Olivier Giroud. Looking at his stats you wouldn’t think so, but the striker’s contract renewal is up in the air.

To complete this special trio, we have another Frenchman in Yacine Adli. He impressed a lot when he was first given the chance in the No.6, but then he fell on hard times with bang-average displays and more bench cameos. Yesterday’s display was the perfect response, therefore, not just from Adli but also the other two in this ‘fight for survival’.

Six wins in eight games [Newsletter]

AC Milan clinched three important points in the big clash against Roma at the weekend, celebrating together with a sell-out crowd at San Siro. Despite the Coppa Italia exit, therefore, things are looking up for the Rossoneri with a very positive league record in the last few weeks. It’s nothing to shout about, of course, but still nice.

Theo, Adli and Giroud

The injury crisis ruined Milan’s hopes in the Champions League, there are no two ways about it, and you could also argue that this was the case in the Coppa Italia. The Rossoneri have managed to stay impressively consistent in the league, though, only really suffering in that four-game winless run in October/November. Since then, in fact, they have lost just once (6W, 1D).
