Marotta’s claim
Before last night’s game, Beppe Marotta spoke to Sky Sport about the Champions League and made quite a bold claim in the process, as MilanPress relays.
“Inter is the club that best represents Italy in the Champions League. We’ve been playing in it for seven years, and it allows us to say that there’s a hint of pride. Today we arrive at this stadium and with this team, knowing we’re competitive.”
Inter may have been in the competition for the past seven years, and Milan may not be present now. However, it is crucial to note that the Rossoneri still hold seven Champions League titles. Something which the Nerazzurri have not.

Inter is the only club in history of UCL, no, in history of UEFA competitions (C1+C2+C3+C4) to lose 5-0 in a final and on top of that in a neutral stadium.
Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and Celtic Glasgow if you want to include the entire history, have never won a UCL (or an EC) before meeting Inter in the final.
That’s not an easy performance to match.

Milan in the last 15 years probably have a worse UCL record than Atalanta. Ajax too won some UCLs but that does not make them a big club in the UCL nowadays.
Milan was Italy’s best representative until the 2000s, Juve in the 2010s and Inter so far in the 2020s. Marotta was talking about the present, others live in the distant past.
Yeh I think inter’s time “best representing” Italy is over.. The final against PSG was the most embarrassing in the history of football and it’s your worse start in the league since 2010 or something…
When the team you’re managing has just recently lost with thi biggest margin in the history of football, the best thing to do is to keep quit.
No one is talking anymore about the 2010s Juve as somehow the pride of Italy in Europe and they did waaayyy better than Inter during the last 7 years.

What present ? Will you in few years from now look at the finals you lost to Man City and PSG with nostalgia ? We as Milan fans might be living in the distant past, but at least we had a past to live in.
“What present?” is right. Inter beat Ajax. Big deal. We’ll see how they do in the last phases against really good teams. Their last final with PSG 0-5 allows us to have a pretty good idea of how it will be.
Besides, Inter has just lost 2 of their first 3 Serie A games.
Without Inzaghi and with an old core of players, Inter are definitely not as scary as in recent years. I fear Napoli way more than Inter, these days.
I don’t expect Inter to win anything this season too, but that is to be seen in the future. Time will tell and until then we are in the present.
Reaching a final is still an achievement, even if lost 5:0 to a Qatar-funded PSG. PSG were defeated in the World Cup final 3:0 by Chelsea, but they are still proud of reaching the final and Luis Enrique has talked about it as an achievement.
The fact that some rival fans get so triggered from Inter reaching the final and want to highlight every now and then that Inter were “humiliated” speaks volumes.
Honestly, I would prefer to get smashed every year in the final after making good performances vs the likes of Barca and BM rather than fail to reach the last 16 because I can’t beat Dinamo Zagreb and Feyenoord. It is better to be “humiliated” by the big guys than to be “humiliated” by the little ones.

It might come as a shock, but almost none of us here is on sempreinter to see how interista react after each win, draw or loss.
Among all of my friends, collegues, none of whom support Milan (at least as their first club), few of whom support Italian clubs and almost all of whom support Real Madrid, FC Barcelona or english teams, pretty much everyone agree that inter was better off FC Barcelona playing that final. “At least it could have been competitive”, so they say. No person that I know somehow sees anything great in what Inter did after that final.
And finally, you either win UCL or you don’t. All this talk about it’s better to lose 5-0 in the final, rather than in the round of 16 is BS. Do you have an extra title or not, that’s all what matters.

So finishing in the 2nd place in Serie A is the same as finishing 17th. A team that reaches the final has not achieved more than one that does not qualify for the group stage or fails to reach the last 16. A very interesting way of thinking.
Unless you’re a team like Getafe, Sassuolo, Sunderland who never won anything in eons and for which any place above their best ranking is an achievement, titles are all that matters.
Now is 2nd the same as 17th ?
Not exactly, you have to work way harder to make a 17th ranked team finish 1st than a second ranked team.
Also by finish in the top 4, you fight for “another title”. Also you get more money which can help build a better team to win titles.
But all of these are mean to win titles.
For big clubs, titles are the be all end all.

Well better late than never…. 25 plus years and counting and finally they can barely make a claim for flying the flag for Italy. Been there done that. Back then we did all the work so that the whole league could have kept the 4 UCL spots.
