Massara ‘satisfied’ with summer mercato as he highlights the ‘changing’ characteristics of football

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan director Ricky Massara have insisted that he and the club are ‘satisfied’ with their efforts in the summer transfer window, and also highlighted the way football is heading.

Milan were always tipped to be up at the top end of the table again after their Scudetto win last season, but the predictions on Napoli varied wildly after a summer that saw a lot of player turnover with arguably three of their best players leaving. Tonight, they face off with both on 14 points from six games.

Massara spoke during an interview with DAZN ahead of the game against Napoli and he was asked about the business Milan managed to do over the summer, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.

“Napoli did well. We are satisfied, we are convinced that we have a competitive team. We are happy,” he said.

“The characteristics of football are increasingly moving towards speed and quality, whoever has more strength in their legs can make a difference. Pioli is doing a great job, he has made all the players grow.”

There are some notable absences for the game against the Partenopei though, with Rafael Leao suspended after being sent off in the last league game, while Divock Origi, Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are all injured which reduces the depth in the attacking department.

On Leao, Massara said: “He has attacking characteristics, Krunic will give more balance. We lose some speed, but we gain balance.”

Finally, on the game itself: “I don’t know if it’s a season-defining challenge, but it’s a great game. We expect a great show, they are two strong teams. The title is still a long way off, but it will be a difficult test that both teams want to overcome.”
