Mediaset: Milan forced into Leao counter-move as Real Madrid are a serious threat

By Oliver Fisher -

Real Madrid are serious about an attempt to sign Rafael Leao but AC Milan are planning a counter move to keep him at the club, a report claims.

SportMediaset (via MilanNews) reports how the question regarding the future of Leao continues to be spoken about at Casa Milan, especially when considering that he was one of the great protagonists of the Scudetto win.

Real Madrid are a real threat, but Milan and even the new owner Gerry Cardinale absolutely do not intend to lose the young Portuguese winger because of his importance to the team and the project moving forward.

His agent Jorge Mendes is asking for more than the €4.5m net per season put on the plate by Milan, and the current demand is now around €6-7m net. Milan would like to insert a higher release clause in the new contract than the current one (€150m) of around (€250-300m).

  1. Make the clause 300 mil and give him 6 mil a season and we’ve got a deal. If we lose him, that will be a huuuuge set back both in quality of play and financially, as we’ll have to spend way more money to replace him than it’d cost to pay him a few extra mil a year.

    1. You really think his agent will accept a release clause from 300M? He can’t co anywhere then for the rest of his life. He will leave 100%

    2. Why do people get stuck on like for like? Will he need to be replaced by exactly the same level player? What if his sale allows us to improve three positions? Yes, maybe the new LW isn’t as good as Leao, but if it’s a pretty good one plus a much better AMC than Diaz and a much better RW than Saladmaker and Messia then overall it’s a stronger squad. Leao is great, but great teams are 11 good players, not one or two world class players and a bunch of scrubs.

  2. The only threat that Real Madrid represent is that they can pay the 150 mm clause of Leao and AC Milan cant do nothing about other then that AC Milan is safe because if Leao does not want to move from Milan Mendes cant push to much has he works for Leao and not the other around!

  3. Calm down, folks. The guy ei’ll stay with us, with a substantial pay rise and a higher release clause, not something crazy like 300 / 500 M, but something around, lets say, 200 / 220 M.

    Forza Milan!

  4. Why is a 300M release clause crazy? Some Barcelona players have a 1B dollar release clause. Vinicius JR has a huge releas clause as does Neymar. Anything is possible. Doesn’t mean a team will necessary pay that amount – you negotiate. Leao will be one of the top 5 players in the world in a few years if he keeps up his evolution as a player. Historically We always sell our own players for less – why not make it more in the event he says he wants to leave. Trust in M&M. Give him the 6M he wants and put in the 250-300m clause. English and Spanish teams and PSG will have no issue paying that amount or close to it. Again at best they pay it and we make huge cash to buy more players – at worst it’s a Negotiation starting point – very simple.

    1. So, in Spain it’s much more common to have release clauses. I actually think it may be mandatory per league rules, so clubs insert ridiculous release clauses as a fail safe.

    2. mate he was a ghost yesterday against a decent rightback. He looks worldclass bc we have some slow defenders in the league. If he plays in the Prem he will flop i think

  5. If the ‘threat’ is them paying 150m for him, then I don’t think that’s a huge problem, unless they decide to wait until the very end of the window to do it.

But it would be stupid anyway, when they already have Vinicius Jr on the left wing.

  6. R Leao to Real Madrid for
    a. €95m plus bonuses for each title won (UCL-15m, LaLiga 10M, all others 5m)
    b. L Jovic & Mariano as part exchange (or on loan with option to buy where 60% of remaining contract salary is paid to them by RM)
