Milan’s 2025 summer mercato is the biggest gamble in recent years

AC Milan are preparing to make wholesale changes in the summer, and there are several areas which need to be addressed. However, faith is low in the capabilities of the management.

Last summer, Milan spent quite heavily, at least compared to seasons gone, but there were questions about several incomings at the time, and as the season progressed, these questions only grew. Then, in January, when the same players were rumoured to be on the departure list, frustrations grew.

Despite this, things settled a little, as the Rossoneri looked to draw back their season, making big investments on the pitch – notably in a striker – during the January mercato. However, this was questioned again – why wait six months to sign a striker that was needed in the summer?

Faith in the management’s ability to recruit players dropped, significantly. A fantastic thing to hear as the summer window approaches.

Then, we have the ability to recruit staff.

In the summer, Julen Lopetegui was chosen to lead the side forward after Stefano Pioli’s, arguably overdue, departure, but fan backlash stopped the move from going ahead. Instead of the Spaniard, the Diavolo settled for Paulo Fonseca.

Numerous reliable sources had claimed that Lopetegui is not a recent idea for Milan and that he has actually been evaluated over the course of the last few months in a rigorous process before it was determined that he ticked the most boxes of any potential candidate. The decision to do such a quick U-turn, therefore, was strange.

Barring a few positive results here and there, it was a depressing era of the club’s recent history, as Milan quickly tumbled, and whilst he received the sack, it was, again, probably a little too late – a trend is developing.

Even with the sacking, though it was the right decision, the club and more specifically, the management, were criticised due to their conduct when firing the head coach – just before a pivotal game against Roma, before sending him to the wolves that knew his fate before he did.

Sergio Conceicao was tasked with then uplifting the season, with the Rossoneri desperate for any signs of life. At first, it seemed they had struck gold, with the Portuguese winning the Supercoppa in his first two games.

Since then though, it has been a mixture of poor results, controversies and looking past the head coach.

A new head coach will arrive in the summer, backed by a new sporting director, and whilst the power has moved from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Giorgio Furlani, whether the success of the decisions will be any different remains to be seen.

This summer has to be perfect if the Diavolo are to get back on track, and the gambles must be calculated.
