Milan 3-1 Chievo: Higuain brace helps Rossoneri to commanding win

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan continued their resurgence with a 3-1 win over Chievo Verona at San Siro on Sunday.

A brace from Gonzalo Higuain, including a pair of assists from Suso, and a goal from Giacomo Bonaventura helped Gennaro Gattuso’s side heap more misery on winless Chievo.

Veteran Sergio Pellissier did pull one back for the visitors, but it would prove to be just a consolation as Milan move 10th.

Sorrentino was called into action in the fourth minute when he was forced to make a smart save from a Franck Kessie shot.

The Chievo goalkeeper made yet another good save when Giacomo Bonaventura’s low effort was palmed away, with Depaoli denying Hakan Calhanoglu’s effort from the rebound.

Milan did get a deserved breakthrough three minutes before the half hour mark as Suso found Higuain with a low ball at the near post that the Argentine fired home with ruthless efficiency.

Just seven minutes later it was 2-0 as the same combination worked wonders again. Suso picked the ball up around 25 yards out and found Higuain with a pinpoint pass, and the former Juventus man made no mistake, sending Sorrentino the wrong with with a clinical finish.

On the stroke of half time former Milan man Valter Birsa almost got his side back into the game, but he dragged his half-volley wide of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s left post.

The Rossoneri had the first real chance of the second half in the 50th minute when Ignazio Abate was found on the overlap, but this time Sorrentino was equal to his effort across goal.

In the 56th minute Milan got a deserved third goal through Bonaventura. The former Atalanta man side-stepped a defender before firing a deflected effort past Sorrentino and into the far right corner.

Chievo pulled one back with just under half an hour left; Sergio Pellissier punishing Milan for giving the ball away by firing a low striker past Donnarumma.

Hakan Calhanoglu thought he had added a fourth goal for Milan in added time, only to be denied by the offside flag.
