AC Milan have accelerated their pursuit of Jean-Philippe Mateta overnight and a deal could be agreed rather quickly, a report claims.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, Milan made significant progress overnight and reached an agreement with Crystal Palace on the transfer fee: €30m. Not only that, they’re trying to close the deal immediately to have the striker right away, rather than wait until the summer.

It could change the Scudetto picture, because a Milan side with a striker who’s scored 38 goals in the last two and a half Premier League seasons is decidedly more threatening to Inter. It’s no coincidence that Juventus have also been trying to sign Mateta too.
The terms of the deal
The question now is whether the deal will close and when. The odds are significantly increasing, and Giorgio Furlani is working to close the operation immediately. Milan has made its choice: Mateta could be the No.9 of the future.
What’s missing? Crystal Palace’s approval for an immediate transfer. Palace are also attempting to acquire Jorgen Strand Larsen – curiously a former Milan Primavera player – from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
If they close that deal, which has been on the up in the last few hours, they’ll give Mateta the green light. Otherwise, they’ll be trying to finalise a transfer agreement in June. Keep an eye on Nottingham Forest too, who have now been overtaken but seem willing to invest a serious sum.
The next few hours will be crucial, because Mateta’s intentions are clear: Italy has always interested him (even in recent years, he’s been very open to a move to Serie A) and he has a deal with Milan over personal terms worth €3-€3.5m net per season plus bonuses.

We have zero healthy strikers in our squad. ZERO!!! Santi is out for ~2 months, Füllkrug has a broken toe (and Allegri refuses to start him anyway) and people don’t want Mateta???? Wow. Do you want us to finish 8th again? 😛
I do not want Mateta for 35 million, as I see it as a yet another bad piece of business, which Milan is quite famous for.
I was against Fullkrug as well, but now since he’s a part of the team, Allegri will have to find a way to utilize him.
Majority of attackers bought for more than 30 millions had been flops:
– Andre Silva
– De Ketelaere
– Nkunku
– Piatek
– Gimenez
Mateta’s acquisition will only continue this pattern. He will end up in Middle East in a year or two, when he’s 30 & his value will drop to 8-10 million.
All the ones on your list have one thing in common. They were all young, inexperience with “potential” . I could argue Mateta is closer to a Giroud than a Silva, Piatek and Gimenez. (Heck Fulkrug is also closer). Meaning, players with more experience leading the line, better at holdup play, which Allegri likes and with more than one season doing reasonably well. Not everybody will need to have a resale value. He’s 28, not 38. He can perform at a high level for 3-4 more years.
Not all. Nkunku was 27, and a 2022–23 Bundesliga top goalscorer and I’d rather keep him as for now.
Piatek & Gimenez were already 23, former with just half a season in Serie A, making him an lavish gamble, whilst the latter is a winner of Eredivisie 2022–23 and a record of 14 goals in 22 European competitions. I’d rather keep Gimenez as well.
Scouting team has to do a better job. You have to find and bring these players before their value skyrockets. And most importantly help them adapt, integrate them in the first team and let them play afterwards. I would love to see Pequeta still playing in Milan, for instance.
As for Mateta, he never had a 20+ goals season, whilst having few disastrous seasons with 2, 3 and 5 league goals respectively. He’s turning 29 this year and his contract expires in 2027. If he was at Milan, nobody would be paying 35 million for him, 18-20 now, 15 in the summer tops. Remember Pulisic for 20, now that is what I call a fantastic piece of business.
There is a good chance this is going to be yet another waste of resources by current incompetent management with no guarantees that the player will do any better than the previous expensive acquisitions. If things don’t work out, that is another 20 million lost, which could have been better invested in the long-term future of the club in the summer instead.

Always something to complain. Füllkrug is a band-aid and a utility man. Mateta is a very very good striker. For 30M this seems like one hell of a poach. If the management gets it done, this will no doubt increase our game (he is one hell of a hold-up player). We criticise them when their business is bad all the time. Now for once let’s celebrate the perfect timing and the closing of a great market opportunity, if it gets done
Let’s not celebrate yet. We’ve seen our hopes getting up and then saw the player going to Inter or some other competitor (I wouldn’t rule Juve out this time)…
Where are we gonna put Leao and Pulisic? Or are we going to move inte a 4-3-3? I would like to se that. Maybe it would be good to have another player to help Leao rest and heal completely.
If buying Mateta makes Allegri change formation, then it’s even better!! No reasons NOT to buy him.

Mateta is a great signing but my question is, Who is going to be sold off in the summer, Nkunku and Gimenez?
Nkunku, Gimenez, RLC and Fofana would be my guess.

Great deal for milan we didn’t have st for long time
Good singing if we manage to pull it off, Mateta’s holdup play us top-notch, he hassles defenders and also drops in to receive balls. At this rate, Nkunkun should look for a new club, to make good use of our attacking strength we could switch to a 3 2 3 2 for formation, double pivot, 2 wingback one AM(Pulisic) 2 strikers (Leao and Mateta).
Too much attack power, provided Alegri doesn’t ask to park the bus.
I would consider him a major coup at 30m. But I remain sceptical about the chances of actually closing the deal. Let’s see and hope. Ofcourse it leaves quite a few players on the fringes, but Mateta would be a real upgrad in my opinion, and we must then trim the squad accordingly.
The best thing what happened is cardinale gets rid of elliot and i hope we see it in the mercato…
