GdS: Milan learn their Champions League fate today – three to avoid plus two ‘derbies’

By Oliver Fisher -

Today is the day that AC Milan will find out their opponents in the quarter-finals of the Champions League as the draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland.

As reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), there are three Serie A clubs among the final eight teams left in the competition for the first time in 17 years and among them it is Milan who have the biggest European tradition to uphold.

While it is clear that the current side are not close to some of the legendary Rossoneri teams in terms of experience and in terms of quality, but the round of 16 win against Tottenham showed that the club can retrace its DNA in the Champions League.

Milan face a tough draw no matter who they are paired with today but it is automatic to think that drawing Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid would be the toughest test. The Premier League side have Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland, the Bundesliga champions are a full Teutonic-style battleship with a young coach, while Real Madrid have Carlo Ancelotti and Karim Benzema.

Benfica are an unpredictable team that entertain, Chelsea are an expensive squad that does not seem to have clicked yet, and goes without saying that the possibility of drawing Inter or Napoli would put Italian football at the centre of attention in a very tense ‘Euroderby’.
