Tuttosport: Milan’s complicated path to Champions League last 16 – the two ways they can qualify

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will make the trip to the Spanish capital to face Atletico Madrid knowing that their chances of qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League are slim but not zero.

Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes that Milan’s path to the knockout stages will be very complicated because it requires wins against the LaLiga champions and group-topping Liverpool plus a favour in other games not concerning them. The table currently stands as follows: Liverpool 12 points, Porto 5, Atletico Madrid 4 and Milan 1.

There are two scenarios in which Milan qualify. The first is that they have to win on Wednesday evening by at least two goals and then have to beat Liverpool at San Siro too in the last match of the group stage. Then, the Reds must defeat Porto and then the Portuguese side and Atletico must draw in the final matchday.

The second scenario is more complicated: also in this case Milan will have to beat the Spaniards (by at least two goals) and Liverpool, then there must be a draw between Liverpool and Porto and Atletico Madrid on the last day would have to beat the Portuguese side. In this situation, Milan would go through above Simeone’s team because of goal difference in head-to-head matches.
