AC Milan have taken the Scudetto race right down to the wire already which is something they failed to do last season, but are they a better team than 2020-21?
La Gazzetta dello Sport begin a comparison with the most obvious one: Milan are currently on course to get more than the 79 they got in 38 games last season, as they are currently on 74 with four games still on the calendar.
On the 34th matchday of 2020-21, Milan had scored 2 more goals (62 against 60) compared to this season, but had conceded 11 more. This much better goal difference has translated into points, also thanks to some precious 1-0 wins such as against Napoli, Empoli and Cagliari.
The Rossoneri are having some problems with final product because they have had less shots on target (168 in 2021-22 versus 189 in 2020-21), while the overall shots taken (218 against 185) and those blocked (153 against 134) have increased.
Looking at the pitch as an overview, Milan on average win the ball back a couple of metres higher up the field compared to last year. The average position (centre of gravity) of the team and the offside line are also slightly higher.
