CorSera: Milan need a way out of their crisis – a positive result in the derby is the only way

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have descended into a full-blown crisis having now gone six games without a win and having conceded 18 goals in seven matches in 2023.

Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) report that after yesterday’s rest day, the preparation leading up to the derby will officially begin today with the full squad back in training. While an easier game on Sunday might have been a better chance of reversing the current trend, tackling a match like the one against Inter could also provide a turning point.

Sunday’s derby is a real crash test that could ‘reawaken the lost pride’ of the Italian champions. There is no question that a response is needed – particularly from a psychological point of view – because it is clear that Stefano Pioli’s team have lost the spirit and attitude that made them deserved Scudetto winners seven months ago.

Ismael Bennacer is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks but that should not halt the switch from a 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. The Rossoneri are conceding too many goals and therefore Pioli knows he needs to change things up. We must wait until Sunday to see if it was the right call, because a positive result is the only way out of the current rut.

      1. This is the first (and probably the last) derby ever where I’d be happy to lose “only” by two goals. I don’t think I’ve ever even been satisfied with a draw with Inter before but this time even a 0-2 loss would feel like a huge victory considering the most probable outcome of the “Slaughter Sunday”.

  1. You have a solution in Fiorentina for 25M, Amrabat would change the midfield and make it much more resilient. From what I saw he will join Barcelona as Kessie was proved to be bad, like I’ve been saying for a long long time. Why didn’t Milan pick him up for that price, a proved Serie A player and one of the best in the world cup by far? Oh yeah, the soccer owners know how to do it, nothing to worry about.

    1. Dude, the funniest part is most people needed the world cup to realize how good Amrabat is but that dude have actually been balling for a long time and the management flew right past him and went for Bakayoko who in all honesty if Pioli found a way to work with him (just like Gattuso did) Milan won’t be in this current mess.

      1. And still they didn’t go in for him even after the World Cup. I really like him, like Kessie that can play football and pass properly…That is why it seems Barcelona will get him and ditch Kessie…

  2. Pioli should try 3-4-1-2:
    – Gabbia, Kjaer, Kalulu
    – Hernandez, Tonali, Krunik (Benacer), Saelemaekers
    – Diaz
    – Leao, Origi

It can be easely reverted to a 4-2-3-1 if it doesn’t work or this formation can be use as a form of 4-2-3-1 with Kalulu as a RB, but without rushing forward. Saelemaekers provides sufficient effort for the right wing.
