MN: Milan’s defence comes under fire as uncharacteristic mistakes continue to weigh

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan were beaten for the first time this season as Napoli emerged 2-1 victors at San Siro, with the defensive department again coming into question.

MilanNews writes how Stefano Pioli’s side played much better than their opponent, but left the San Siro with zero points because they were unable to take their chances as well as the away team.

The result is certainly negative, and the issues from the absences of Rafael Leao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Divock Origi and Ante Rebic were obvious, but it is perhaps the defence that needs an inquest.

Milan won the Scudetto after keeping 9 clean sheets in their final 11 league games in 2021-22, conceding just twice, but this season so far they have let in 8 goals in the first 7 league games.

Too many individual mistakes have been made, not just yesterday but since the beginning of the season, with lapses in concentration proving to be costly. Sergino Dest and Fikayo Tomori were at fault against Napoli and it proved fatal, but there is no cause for great alarm just yet.

Tomori remains a certainty as do Pierre Kalulu and Simon Kjaer, with Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria very capable full-backs, but now the break comes to reset everything and get those mistakes out of the system.

  1. As I wrote during the summer, the main problem for Milan would be the injuries we always have.
Due to the lack of quality backup players we are burning out our starters (Theo for example).
    Calabria muscle issue
    Theo had an adductor problem
Tonali seems to have an injury
    Florenzi is out
    Rebic is out
    Origi is out

    1. True, they need to fix the Milan Lab, hell it was the best club medical facility in the World during the 90’s and 2000’s, we need to invest, Red Bird needs to fix this issue.
