GdS: Signs show Milan’s defensive mechanisms are working regardless of who starts

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have been able to count upon the tremendous goalkeeping of Mike Maignan recently, but the Frenchman has also experienced some very quiet shifts.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez, Dumfries, Pedro and Candreva are the only players to have shot on goal against the Rossoneri in the last four games. Having Maignan behind the defence certainly helps, but it must also be noted that against Juve for example he didn’t have a save to make, while against Lazio and Sampdoria the shots from Pedro and Candreva barely threatened.

The Rossoneri’s defensive line held up very well in protecting a goalkeeper who is already proving himself to be at the highest level. They lost Kjaer for the whole season and also had to give up Tomori due to the meniscus injury while Ballo-Touré was injured so there was no natural replacement for the suspended Theo Hernandez on Sunday.

Nonetheless, Florenzi stepped up and did a competent job, while Romagnoli and Kalulu did fantastically in the absence of Tomori, as did the attentive Calabria on the right side. It is a sign that the team’s defensive mechanisms are working regardless of those playing.
