Tuttosport: Milan deserve scrutiny after quiet January – a mark for the mercato out of 10

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are deserving of some criticism for their decision not to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window, according to Tuttosport.

The well-known newspaper (via MilanNews) have judged the winter mercato for each Serie A team and they have given a rating out of 10 for each too, awarding the Rossoneri with a score of just 5.5.

It was a bold call from Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara to not strengthen the group available to head coach Stefano Pioli – especially given the selection emergencies already battled this season – but Tuttosport write that ‘we will see how calculated the risk will be’.

Despite the defensive crisis, which everyone thought guaranteed a signing, Milan never brought in a centre-back despite the many transfer links that we saw during the past few weeks. Instead, they signed a striker – Marko Lazetic – and said goodbye to Pietro Pellegri, Milos Kerkez, Andrea Conti and Alessandro Plizzari.

  1. We will see if the priority of saving money and returning to financial healthy status over strengthening the team and adding depth will pay off. I’m concerned we will have a similar injury crisis and deal a massive blow to the rest of the season. I believe our current squad is a strong one and we have the capacity to easily make top 4 (and depending on the derby) fight for the scudetto. But it honestly all depends on the health of our players.
