AC Milan respond to ‘harmful’ and ‘totally unfounded’ Leao renewal story

AC Milan have offered an official response to the rumours that La Gazzetta dello Sport were circulating this morning regarding the future of Rafael Leao.

The paper (via MilanNews) reported this morning that renewal talks between Milan and Leao have stalled because of a disagreement over the release clause that would be inserted in his next contract, with the winger hoping to have it at €70-80m but the Rossoneri wanting to keep it at €150m or even remove it.

They also stated that technical director Paolo Maldini had spoken personally with Leao to try and make some progress but that the meeting was brought to an abrupt end.

However, Milan have decided to issue a public response to the article and have essentially denied any truth to the rumours presented by La Gazzetta.

“With regard to the article published today by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport entitled: ‘Leão Milan total break’, Milan would like to clarify that the negotiation with Rafael Leão has not suffered any interruption,” the club said on Twitter.

“The journalistic narrative of an alleged frost between the parties is not only totally unfounded but also harmful to the Club and its player. AC Milan continues, in fact, the dialogue with Leão and his entourage in a serene and professional atmosphere.”
