CM: Milan hoping to channel the success of 2004-05 – Kessie set for a double role

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter and AC Milan will play the fourth derby of the 2021-22 season tonight at San Siro and the Rossoneri will take comfort from certain precedents.

Calciomercato.com confirm that Davide Calabria has recovered from his fever and will be on the field from the first minute tonight for Milan, joining Tomori, Kalulu and Theo Hernandez in the back four.

Bennacer should play alongside Tonali and Kessie will be moved forward to the role of attacking midfielder where he will have a crucial duel role: to help establish some physical presence in Inter’s third and to disrupt Brozovic’s game. The Ivorian has a clear advantage over Diaz and Krunic to start the game, with Messias, Leao and Giroud completing the attack.

It is the 14th time in their history, Inter and Milan will face each other four times in a single season. The last time was in 2004-05 when Milan won three times and there was one draw. Furthermore, the Rossoneri have remained unbeaten in 7 of the previous 13 seasons where the sides have met four times.

Moreover, Milan have gone through or won the trophy in five of eight knockout matches against Inter in the Coppa Italia. However, the last such game between the two teams saw the Nerazzurri go through in the 1999-00 quarter-finals over two legs.
