AC Milan signed Joao Felix on transfer deadline day from Chelsea on a dry loan deal, but they are already thinking about how to make it permanent.
There have already been reports suggesting that Felix wants to stay at Milan beyond the summer, and before the Roma game – in which the forward made his debut, coming off the bench to score – Geoffrey Moncada certainly left the door open.
According to Calciomercato.com, Felix arrived for a loan fee of €5m including bonuses and Milan will pay a large part of the player’s salary, but Chelsea will participate with a percentage. Given the limited time available to close the deal, it was not possible to negotiate any option or obligation to buy.
However, the Rossoneri and the Blues will be sitting around a table at the end of the season to talk about things, especially if he continues playing the way that he did on debut. But how much money might be needed to land him?
Joao Felix was officially purchased by Chelsea on 21 August 2024 as part of the operation that saw Gallagher go to Atletico Madrid. The Blues valued Felix at €52m, giving him a six-year contract expiring on 30 June 2030 at €8.14m per year.
Considering the UEFA regulation which imposes an amortisation quota to be calculated over five years, by 30 June 2025 – the end of the current season therefore – €41.6m would be the figure needed to avoid a capital loss.
There are two strategies Milan have in mind. The first is a permanent signing for the figure mentioned above, perhaps using a counterpart that can equal or compensate for the outlay (Fikayo Tomori’s return to London cannot be ruled out, as well as the appreciation for Rafael Leao).
The second is a renewal of the loan for another season, this time setting an obligation to buy that is higher than €31.2m, which is the minimum amount for Chelsea to avoid making a capital loss as of June 2026.
A solution, between two clubs who are on great relations, is therefore highly possible. The real battle, however, will be played out on the player’s salary which remains too high for Milan’s internal limits, so it will inevitably be necessary to negotiate that side.
I could be wrong, but I believe that €8m salary is gross, not net?
Either way, the chances of us buying both a midfielder and JF in the summer is slim, at best. And if he’s in a position where he’s done well enough to warrant us signing him, there’ll be other clubs that can.
The part exchange or loan with an obligation would be pretty much the only option and that would mean better two years’ worth of transfer budget. And if p/e then we’d obviously need to find a replacement for whoever is sold. And if we sell his friend Leao, does JF even want to stay with Milan anyway?
Rather than worry about all this, let’s just hope he has a good six months here. Chelsea will burn him into the ground in the Club World Cup nonsense anyway.
there is 3 months left in the season
I think the thing is, players know they will earn more in the premier league (plus a very small handful of other clubs), so their is generally an acceptance that if you want to play somewhere else you will earn less.
He’s not stupid, he knows he’s not been at his best for a while. If he thrives here and feels wanted, he’ll talk at around 5m a year.
I think also salary is 8 million gross.
Well, obviously Milan will sell some of the players. Joao possibly can push one more season loan at Milan.
Tomori could leave for decent fee, Chukwueze can free the spot, Ruben Loftus, Okafor, and other loaned players like Bennacer, Pobega, Kalulu and maybe Adli.
Next season Milan must invest strongly no matter if ucl is there.
There is no way a player with his calibre with more than 100 mil transfer on his teenage years would be paid only with 8 mil gross.
Oh really? Google it and see for yourself.
So basically the idea is that Chelsea doesn’t want to make any money? They just want to not lose money on him? Sounds like it is 100% made up. So, Felix scores 70 goals this season (won’t happen but let’s use this) and Chelsea say, yes, loan him for another 12 months and then you need to pay 31.2M. What? Lets repeat again “figure needed to avoid a capital loss.”
One of the most stupid articles and ideas ever. How much does Theo cost in that case? 😀 Clubs can get him on a cheap.
Eh?
JF doesn’t really fit with Chelsea’s current plan, plays in the same position as their star player and they only took him on to facilitate the Conor Gallagher transfer to Atletico.
So yes, much like us with CdK or Morata, they may well be happy to move him on without making a loss on it.
If he really excels in a few months at Milan, they may look to turn a profit, but at the moment the more important thing for them may be putting the ~€20M annual spend for him (transfer plus wages) towards another position.
But the club decides what they sell for. If we tried to sell Hernandez at the end of this season, I think we’d be looking to get at least 30-40M, but nearly all of that would be ‘capital gain’ that could be reinvested. To be honest, I think this will be the most likely way we could raise the funds to keep JF if we want to.
I mean c’mon.
Just one fu**ing game?
Let him play for the next 10 games for example. Then we will go back to this topic.
Media, please stop being like Man UTD’s delusional media
Well said
Why is everyone so eager to get rid of Tomori!!??? Future captain I tell ya!!!
8 million salary in EPL is gross. As we know how Milan works this will be another loan before purchasing him. I have nothing against him as all fans realize we are a tier or 2 below clubs from Madrid, top 8 clubs in EPL and top German clubs at the minute. For our current standards he is a huge star and this work out similarly to what happened to Pulisic who even though is huge for us looks like he wouldn’t make it for a top EPL team.
What utter drivel. Milan aren’t planning to make a deal for one of the most notoriously inconsistent players permanent and where are you getting this ridiculous idea that clubs base transfer fees on the idea that they must avoid a capital loss?!?!
I would sacreface Tomori for him but not Leao. Tomori can be replaced, Gabia, Thiaw are just as good. Good luck replacing Leao.
Let’s see if he finds consistency first before making a judgment.
