Milan-Juventus has added intrigue off the field – where the Rossoneri want to emulate their rivals

Tonight’s match that pits AC Milan against their fierce rivals Juventus will also have some added intrigue with regards to the projects away from the field.

As our colleagues at SempreMilan.it recall, it is very much early days in the Gerry Cardinale and RedBird era as he bought the Rossoneri club 39 days ago, and they face Juventus who have been owned by the Agnelli family for almost a century.

RedBird Capital paid €1.2bn to purchase 99.97% of Milan’s shares from Elliott Management. Yankee Global Enterprise – owner of the baseball team the New York Yankees – were among the investors that Cardinale managed to get on board.

Juventus have won 72 trophies in the 99 years of ownership of the Agnellis. Before 1923, the year in which the family joined the club, Juve had only won one Scudetto in 1905 despite having been founded in 1897.

There have been four Milan owners in the 21st century: Silvio Berlusconi, who bought the club in 1986; Yonghong Li who bought it from Berlusconi in 2017; Elliott Management who came into possession in 2018, and finally RedBird since August 31 of this year.

Finally, there is the difference between stadiums. Juve for over a decade now have been able to reap the benefits from having their own Allianz Stadium, which has certainly helped the club to increase revenues, while the Rossoneri for their part is still struggling with all the bureaucracy concerning the project of the new San Siro.

The estimate made by the leaders of Milan and Inter is that with a new structure – even if shared – there could be fixed income between €80-100m annually excluding ticket sales.
