Study reveals Milan lead Serie A in key metric that demonstrates their aggression

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are the leaders of Serie A when it comes to a key statistic that demonstrates exactly how Stefano Pioli wants his team to play.

Since Pioli’s arrival as head coach, the Rossoneri have gradually transitioned into being one of the most hard-working and athletic teams in all of Europe not just in Serie A, with a concrete pressing identity and an attack built around advancing the ball quickly.

The data provided by Kama.Sport (via Calciomercato.com) reveals that Milan are the team that have recorded the highest number of fast ball recoveries in the opposing half of the pitch so far this season in Serie A, after having lost the ball.

Pioli and his team lead the Serie A ranking with the highest index of ‘high re-aggression’: the average number of balls immediately recovered in the attacking half – which means within 5 seconds or 3 opposition passes – is 4.55 per game.

This is slightly ahead of Inter who are second at 4.48, and third place for Thiago Motta’s Spezia (3.91), with Atalanta fourth at 3.81. Further back, Juventus, Roma, Lazio and Napoli all have an average of just over 3.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are placed between 4.4 and 5.4, while Bayern Munich are first at 5.84, and PSG (3.3) are only in 13th place in Ligue 1.
