Romano: Milan offer Leao deal worth €35m – the latest on Chelsea’s interest

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are in talks with Rafael Leao over the extension of his contract and the forward has given his ‘priority’ to the Rossoneri, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Leao was last year’s Serie A MVP and there is no doubting that he is one of the hottest properties in Europe given how decisive he was in ending Milan’s title drought as well as his age and potential to grow even further.

However, his current deal expires in June 2024 and at the moment it is uncertain whether the 23-year-old will extend his deal. There have been a number of top clubs linked – Chelsea above all – but their interest has cooled given they signed Mykhailo Mudryk for big money in January.

Writing exclusively in the Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano gave an update on Leao’s situation with regards to renewal talks and potential interest from London.

“At the moment, full priority goes to negotiation with AC Milan. Talks are ongoing, Milan are offering a five-year deal for €7m salary net per season with add-ons also included,” he said.

“Leao gives priority to Milan, but it’s crucial to get it done before the summer or big clubs could move. Chelsea after Mudryk and January signings in that position are more quiet, even if they appreciate the player.”

  1. If Milan are bent on keeping Leao, they should at least give him 9 – 10 million to extend him contact so have the bargaining power to be able to sell to the highest bidder in the not too distant future. Forza Milan.

    1. And surely he will then request 11-12 million from the buying club. Assuming Leao doesn’t suddenly turn into the next Di Maria, will he be worth 11-12 million? Even 10m? Who will buy him then? Just food for thought.

    2. That logic doesn’t work because you have to find a buyer able to take that salary on. And the higher his salary, the lower the price he can be sold for, if he can be sold at all.

  2. You give him 9-10 mill and if he drops in form then you get stuck with a player that you can’t even offload cause his stupid wage.
Sell him in summer for the best ofer and if he plays ball then freeze him.
No player has to act like this little fucks that Milan either raised or made them famous.
Management needs to be tough and Kessie should had been bench warmer last season at least the second part. Why cause ur not part of the future and we need to give space to new players so they can grow.

  3. As great as he is he’s not a gamechanger. When the team struggles then he struggles. Gamechangers are people like Ibra who can swing everyone’s mindset, Maignan who’s talent makes teammates relax so they can attack more, Theo who’s energy going forward causes everyone to go forward, and Kessie’s guaranteed lockdown of the defensive midfield.

Leao is just individually talented. It’s exciting but it’s not useful on a team like Milan. He would be a Golden Boot threat on a team like Man City where he can focus on what he does best.

Sell him then spend the money wisely. Part of it should go to buying Brahim, if possible. I know people are iffy on Brahim but he gives stability in the midfield and he’s still very young. He’s no longer a question mark like a new person would be.
