AC Milan are looking for a new central defender ahead of the summer transfer window, and Diego Coppola has emerged as the prime candidate.
This morning’s edition of Tuttosport writes that in addition to deciding the hierarchies for the back line at the end of this season, Milan are monitoring several emerging central defenders in view of next season.
The identikit has been set: the directors want a young player, possibly Italian by passport or with homegrown status at least, to help the squad list issue. These characteristics certainly fit very well with the name of Diego Coppola.
Fikayo Tomori’s future remains uncertain because the Englishman started well under Sergio Conceicao and then went back down the hierarchy. His value remains high, around €25m, and he is popular in the Premier League.
With that money, the Rossoneri can use the funds to sign an Italian defender and it is Coppola that is the name circled in red at present. A cornerstone of Paolo Zanetti’s defence, the young centre-back from Verona has so far made 27 appearances this season, 26 of which came in Serie A.
His excellent season is not going unnoticed and Milan’s scouts have started to seriously follow him also due to his versatility, characteristics that are currently missing in the Milan squad. His contract runs until 2027, so a summer move is far from ruled out.
A tiny portion of my faith would be restored (not really) about this “project”, should our targets be homegrown and domestic talents. And of course under the supervision of an actual sporting director and Italian coach.
Coppola, Nuno Tavares, Frendrup, Rovella, Bernabe, Ricci, Prati, Da Cunha, Krstovič, Assane Diao etc.
There are many talented players in Serie A to look at.

I think Tavares is out of reach though. Probably worth ~50M already and if he has another season like this we’re talking prime Theo numbers.
Milan are basically at year zero now so I couldn’t care less what happens in the transfer market.
There’s about 6 players I hope aren’t sold:
– Gabbia (if he’s sold I will probably give up altogether);
– Maignan:
– Leao;
– Theo
– Pulisic;
– Reijnders.
The rest they can do what they want with. Sell, keep, I don’t care.
If they sign some Italians or anyone vaguely connected to Italy then that would help.

Agreed!!! That’s a great lineup. Either Rovella or Ricci would be great. Like them both although Rovella might be more of a creating midfielder for the middle. We definitely have to bring Tonali back for sure!
Rovella is 30M with a conditional obligation to buy for Lazio. So we’d need probably 50M to even get them to consider a sale. Tonali is loved by NU, so like maybe 80M? Even if he arrives for less than he was sold even if he’s improved as a player, it would be no less than 60M. Are we really spending 110-130M on two players (and that without CL football)? Dreaming is free I guess.
The only way Milan could be interested in an Italian player would be that Moncada is leaving.

Saelemaekers Would be a great fullback at no cost. Sell Maignan and Hernandez and get great value for them and spend it on tonali and carnesecchi. Sell all the loanees and use that to get depth players while keeping bondo, fofana, thiaw and the team will be competitive. Ancelotti? Pay whatever he wants before he goes to coach the Brazilian national team and then retires. Get rid of ibra, monads, and Furlani and while your at get rid the owners. We need Italian blood who want to play for the shirt, know the league, and have pride.
I miss the Berlusconi days when he would buy the best players from Serie A rivals. Diego Coppola is a good defender. Better than Tomori, Gabbia and Pavlovic.
Milan should seriously buy Coppola to replace Tomori but I would also sell Pavlovic for Radu Dragusin.
