CorSera: Federal Prosecutor investigating racist abuse directed towards Maignan against Cagliari

By Mitchell Wilks -

Racist abuse directed towards Mike Maignan when Milan played Cagliari on 19 March is being investigated by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) according to a report.

Milan left Cagliari with a vital 1-0 victory, but the result was ruined with Maignan being subjected to various forms of racist abuse from the home crowd.

Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) report that the Sports Judge took no measures following the incident, thus it has been taken on by the Federal Prosecutor of the Federation’s office, who will investigate the matter.

Milan’s squad brawled with Cagliari following the full-time whistle as ultras directed chants towards Maignan, throwing bottles in his direction. The Frenchman and defender Fikayo Tomori confronted the ultras, before reacting to the abuse on social media following the game.

Cagliari fans have a history of racist abuse, with three being banned for life by the club as a result of it in February 2020.
