Failure to reach the last 16 of the Champions League means another target has not been met for AC Milan, who are heading for a big summer shake-up.
Calciomercato.com‘s Daniele Longo begins a piece by remarking that ‘there is nothing rational about Milan’ and the proof came in the return match against Feyenoord. They were on top for 50 minutes and had some ‘beautiful’ moments, and then everything fell apart.
Theo Hernandez is the clearest example of everything that has not worked and continues not to work at Milan, given that he has the potential to be a top player and one of the best in the world in his role, but instead shows a mediocre attitude and performance levels.
In just 19 days, Milan went from the possibility of qualifying directly for the round of 16 to a shock elimination at the hands of the ‘kids from Feyenoord’, who are fourth in the Eredivisie and were battling an injury crisis.
Winning in Zagreb against Dinamo would have been enough, but instead the Rossoneri suffered two defeats and a draw in the three games they had to make sure they made it through. They threw away another chance after taking the lead just 36 seconds in with a goal from Santiago Gimenez, too.
It was another evening that went against logic, a short circuit that ‘must lead to deep reflections and decisive choices’ because this is a team that ‘needs to be rebuilt from the ground up’, Longo adds in his article.
In the press conference, Conceicao tried to cling to the average points per game he has obtained so far in the league and to the success of the Supercoppa Italiana. There is some merit there, yet also the risk of suffering a ‘psychological backlash’.
Now the team must somehow put it behind them and move on to the Torino game on Saturday. Milan can no longer drop points, they must look forward and not to what could have been and was not, before the ‘revolution in the summer’.
Ah, the good old Year Zero. We’ve had plenty of those now haven’t we? 😀 😀 😀 😀
But maybe this time start with renewing the management? Especially the one choosing the players (& coaches). Then there wouldn’t be a need to revamp the whole team every year.
Again, same thing like on another topic. The responsible person is Gerry Cardinale, not Ibrahimovic, Furlani etc. They wouldn’t be there without him. Same things as Conceicao for the team. He selects who is on the field.
Until we get rid of Gerry, I don’t think anything will improve. It has been going down since that guy and his company bought the club.
This team is being rebuilt every season. The transfers that were made in January should have been made in June or July. And a proper defensive midfielder should have been brought in to cover for 4 attacking players.
The best rebuild would be a new owner. Redbird is literally trash at their job. They can’t do better than a company that doesn’t even do sports management. Really really bad owner for Milan.
Milan should just buy Onyedika, the defensive midfielder of Brugge. Maldini had wanted when he was our SD
Let me guess? Another five or six 20 mil. players will be randomly picked by the algorithm, there will be no change in the management (because they are so good at their job) and a Fonseca-type coach will replace Sergio? Wow, what a revolution.
Another rebuild??? Yikes 😳
How about just being competent so you don’t have to be rebuilding all the time
If you’re treating the symptoms and not the core problem, you won’t heal your ailment. So, maybe they could start with someone who actually knows how to assemble a functional squad… Just a thought.
This is sad and hilarious at the same time. RottenBird are rebuilding season after season yet we are getting worse and worse. As long as they’re driven by their inflated egos, they won’t look at themselves and see the real culprits.
Replace the management first thing.
Would this be our third or fourth rebuild in two years?
Forwards: From Okafor/Jovic to Morata/Abraham to Gimenez/Felix to ???
Wingers: From Leao/Saelemaekers/Messias to Leao/Pulisic/Chuk/Sottil to ???
Midfielders: From Tonali/Bennacer/Krunic to Reijnders/Loftus-Cheek/Adli to Reijnders/Fofana/Musah to ???
Right-Backs: From Calabria/Florenzi/Kalulu to Calabria/Emerson/Jimenez to Walker/Emerson/Jimenez
It’s sad to see. As Maldini said, we needed to invest in a a few high quality players when the team was an attractive destination, Serie A champions and Champions League semifinalists. Unfortunately, Maldini and Massara were unceremoniously fired and Tonali sold, ripping the soul out of the team and signalling the end of a short but successful “era”.
There is a core to build around in this disaster of a squad they tried to build. Maignan, Reijnders, Puli, Gimenez, Pavlo, Thiaw. But whether this management is intelligent enough to build around these guys and strengthen remains to be seen
I would add Fofana, Musah and Gabbia to that list. They represent both quality and depth.
Some may argue with Fofana, but he clearly has quality and has been overused. Musah brings great positional flexibility and can clearly be coached up. Gabbia should be thought of as right there on the same level with Thiaw and Pavlo.
Of course also keep Camarda, Jimenez and Bartesaghi along with the young keeper Torriani.
Thank god we fired Maldini.
Here we go again. Imagine, they were cheap when they made the CL. Now, with only 4 spots, we probably won’t make it next year. And they’re going to splash out the cash? Yeah right. RedBird is to blame. Cardinale and his rats Furlani and Moncada need to go.
LOLOLOLO – ANOTHER “REVOLUTION”?????
Didn’t we just have that like the past 2 years since Maldini was fired???? And where are we at now???
What a disgrace. Ya let’s have a squad revolution every summer cause that is exactly how you build a championship team🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
As perfectly said by many others above, the PROBLEM is GERRY and his decisions. Everything starts at the top. When you have a horrible owner everything else falls apart. From Scudetto and UCL semi finals to this 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Wonder what the Redbird Lovers will say now??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
DISGUSTING
But let’s not kid ourselves here. We were always going to have a “revolution” this summer. We were always going to sell Theo and Leao – because need to pay that 13% VENDOR LOAN – now more than ever after missing out on UCL $$$$. Felix is only on a loan. He won’t be renewed. I’m sure other sales will follow – Tomori? Good Times. Wonder what Serie B looks like 🤣😭
Oddly enough, I think both Leo and Theo stay as they raise brand value. If they do stay, then I think Jerry is trying to sell. But if they do get sold this summer, then I think Jerry will hold onto the club longer. Curious how this summer plays out.
Maybe Elliot even hired Redbird simply to operate this club and try to get a stadium built so that a true sale would happen down the road to a different entity. Is that possible?
None of the 3 stooges in managment know to rebuild a squad. Hope crapbird looses the club or sells it.
First bring someone that knows how to build a squad on football knowledge and not because some computer tells you how to build a squad. It’s not hard to see that this team is built like you build a baseball team. But when you do it in football then you dont get chemistry.
