CM: Milan-Napoli will be a fifth all-Italian UCL clash – history smiles on the Rossoneri

By Oliver Fisher -

Today’s Champions League draw in Nyon produced an all-Italian battle as champions AC Milan were pitted against runaway league leaders Napoli.

As Calciomercato.com report, the two teams have never crossed paths in European competitions but it will be the fifth game in the Champions League between two Serie A teams, and Milan have been involved in three of the previous four.

On two occasions the Rossoneri knocked out their city rivals Inter, beating them in the semi-finals in 2003 (1-1 on aggregate but going through on away goals) and in the quarter-finals two years later (5-0 on aggregate).

In between there was obviously the historic Old Trafford final where Andriy Shevchenko netted the winning spot kick and his team-mates lifted their sixth Champions League after beating Juventus on penalties.

The Bianconeri in turn prevailed in the first historic Italian derby in Europe back in the autumn of 1985 in the second round of the then European Cup, beating Hellas Verona 2-0 in Turin after a goalless draw at the Bentegodi.

  1. So, we play against Napoli 3 times in April, in only 16 days (on April 2nd, 11th and 18th). I think we will destroy them! We basically dominated the game against Napoli this year but the luck was heavily on their side. Now it’s time for Gods to look at us. I expect Benfica in semis and whoever comes to the finals – hey it’s one game and everything is possible! I don’t think Theo and Giroud will lose two finals in this season. They know what to do!

  2. Hope milan shows their best against napoli. They are on fire but we dominated them, 1st half of the season, they got lucky. We can all believe. Milan-bendica next.
