CorSera: Milan out of the cup after dreadful display – now a response is needed

AC Milan’s 2022-23 Coppa Italia campaign lasted just one game as Stefano Pioli’s men were beaten 1-0 by Torino after extra time last night.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) report, it is the first time since 2008 that the Rossoneri have been knocked out in the last 16 of the competition, even though they played from 70 minutes onwards with an extra man due to Djidji’s sending off.

Pioli had to send a reworked team onto the field in an attempt to let the most used starters catch their breath. After the red card the likes of Leao, Giroud, Theo and Bennacer came on, which should have been enough to win the game for Milan, but it just seemed to bring about confusion as several chances went begging.

The feeling of disappointment is great as one of the four objectives that Pioli had set for the team at the beginning of the season has vanished. Now Milan find themselves without the Coppa Italia and seven points behind Napoli leaders in the league.

The Supercoppa Italiana will be played in Riyadh against city rivals Inter next week, a game that now means more, while there is an away match in Lecce at the weekend where answers are needed after the collapse against Roma. Pioli’s team can no longer make mistakes.
