Tuttosport: Milan arrive at the moment of truth – struggles against ‘lesser’ sides must end

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan face a must-win game against Spezia this evening, just as they all are between now and the end of the season with two objectives to fight for.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes this morning, Hellas Verona’s resurgence has seen Spezia drop into the bottom three and with a three-point gap to safety, they are in need of a win and might not sit back against Milan like other sides have.

However, the so-called ‘lesser’ sides have made 2023 a nightmare for Milan as they drew games against Salernitana, Empoli and Cremonese, in addition to losing against Udinese who are admittedly a level above the others.

Today the Rossoneri will take the field in Liguria with the double awareness that they must get three points if they are to finish in the top four but also they are no longer able to make mistakes, which adds some pressure especially in view of Tuesday’s Euroderby.

There are a number of injury problems though, as Ismael Bennacer’s season is over, Rafael Leao will not be risked, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is injured and then yesterday it emerged Rade Krunic and Junior Messias have slight muscle problems too.

  1. Against lesser teams, Pioli always fielded a “weak team” on the grounds that it was a tactical choice and all the players were “of the same level” in the team. But he even fielded players who weren’t contributing consistently and hoped for a “miracle”, instead of giving young players or even players who lacked minutes like Adli a chance. If you field players like Origi and Toure and then don’t produce results, what’s wrong with giving others a chance. After all, the result will be the same and we can still hope for a miracle. Hopefully Pioli is aware, Goddess Fortuna has never been sitting in any place for too long
