MN: Milan have three games to ‘recover’ Serie A season – the stakes and stipulations

There could be a present at the end of the Serie A season for AC Milan, but they are not really in control of their fate.

This season, Milan have fallen below almost every expectation set at the beginning of the season, but there is still a chance to claw back the seemingly impossible. However, it certainly will not be easy.

As Milan News writes this afternoon, there are three games to recover the year, and this regards the potential entry into Europe via the league. A difficult road yes, but the Rossoneri have some say on their own future.

Both the Champions League and Europa League sit six points away, whilst the Conference league place is five points away – which seems near impossible on the face of it. However, it really is not.

Lazio and Juventus face each other this weekend, and it could see both teams drop points – which would be an ideal, and could open up a door into the competition via the league – something which could not be turned down.

Realistically, to stand any chance of a European finish, the Diavolo must be perfect from this point onwards, so they have to beat Bologna, Roma and Monza. A difficult task, indeed.

If they fail to do so, then they will have to fall back on the Coppa Italia, which takes place on the 14th. Salvation is possible, but Milan have not made it half difficult for themselves this year.

  1. realistically guys , if roma lose next 2 games vs atalanta and us , we are going to leap frog them . which we can
juventus are almost certain to make champios league but htey can always bottle it
    fireontina i dont have hope
bolgona have tough fixtures and if we do beat them , then we have chance of leap frogging them . but theres still lazio who have inter and juve , now we can reach lazio , roma , and bologna if everything goes according to plan which is 1% but juve is still anamolous and have greatest chance of winning champions league , if only we won 1 big game we would be deficiting poionts to 3points nehind champions league , but if it means we can focus on serie A . let it be .

    1. Too many ifs. You’re relying on FIVE teams dropping more points than us for us to finish 4th. Three are currently level for 4th. Of those three, Juventus and Lazio will have to gain no more than two points out of their last 3 games for us to be able to finish above them, as they own the standings tie-breaker against us. If we beat Roma, which we will have to do anyway, we’ll own the tie-breaker against them. Then we would need to beat Bologna by two goals or more on Friday, as they beat us 2-1 in the first game, to own the tie-breaker against them, and also hope they take no more than 4 points from their last two games. Meanwhile, Fiorentina owns the tie-breaker against us, and will need 7 points from their last 9 to lock us out of the CL.

Obviously still mathematically possible, but it will be an all-time historical event for us to collect all 9 points from the last three games, while all teams ahead of us drop enough points. I can see us overtaking Bologna and Fiorentina, and maybe Roma, but I think one of Lazio and Juventus will get at least 3 points from 9 available to lock us out of the CL. At most I think we’ll finish 5th, but most likely 7th, which would be enough for Conference League if we lose the Coppa Italia final only if Bologna finishes 6th or higher.

  2. not gonna happen. too little too late for us. The best chance we have is Europa League via cup. UCL is out of reach and to be fair, deservingly so.

  3. We have been sh*t throughout whole season and now you are telling me we beat all three opponents and our rivals lose their games? 😂🤣🤣

Let’s focus on Coppa Italia and that’s all for this season

  4. We really look down on other clubs and Italian football as a whole. Us, sitting in the ninth place, still believe the 8 teams above us will bottle to some extent. While we have been bottling the hardest among everyone. When can we start to be humble?

  5. Yes, a disappointing season in many ways, but the doom and gloom commentary is baffling. When you have three coaches within one year — you will get indifferent results. That said, InterMilan just advanced to the UEFA finals, beating FC Barcelona — in two of the most exciting games I have ever watched. AC played InterMilan five times this year. We won three and drew two. Plenty of talent here.

  6. Focus on winning the Coppa Italia. That’s a must. The other games must be won too, but the focus must be on the Coppa.
